Nick Winslow scores 1,000th point in St. Paul win

ORANGE TWP. — Nick Winslow's St. Paul career began by scoring the first 11 points of his first-ever game in less than two minutes as a freshman in a win over Monroeville. It was no surprise, then, for Wednesday's career milestone to come to fruition. Winslow became the fifth player in program history to reach 1,000 career points — five games into his senior season — in the Flyers' 81-54 win over host Mapleton in a Firelands Conference game. Scott Endsley (1,496), Mike Ebert (1,258), Aaron Fries (1,237) and Chad Stein (1,235) are the other 1,000-point scorers in St. Paul history. "He's a great kid who has worked very hard at the game of basketball, and he joins a pretty elite group," St. Paul coach Mike Smith said. "I've had the fortunate to coach four of the five … Nick is an awesome kid who again, really puts a lot of time in when nobody is watching. We're excited for him. He handled it like a champ tonight. We just told him to go out and play, and he had another pretty good game." Nick Winslow scored 26 points in the win, as it took a big second half for the unbeaten Flyers (5-0, 3-0 FC) to pull away from the Mounties (0-6, 0-4). The Flyers led 20-16 after one quarter and just 34-32 at halftime. After a 10-day layoff from the gym, the St. Paul boys basketball team has looked the part on offense. "In the first half we were in a dogfight," Smith said. "We kind of challenged them at halftime and all of the sudden it just took off. We played with a lot more emotion in the second half, and from about halfway through the third quarter and the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, we were very good at both ends of the floor." St. Paul extended the lead to 55-46 through three quarters, then blew the game open with a 26-8 margin in the fourth quarter. Scotty Adelman scored 21 points for the Flyers, who also got 19 points from Nate Winslow. After a 10-day quarantine from a COVID-19 exposure, St. Paul has scored 75, 76 and 81 points in three victories since Dec. 19. "We're pretty good offensively right now," Smith said. "I like what we're doing there, but we have to get better defensively. We've been struggling defensively and in the first half we didn't defend like we needed to. "But we got it done on the road and we get another couple days of practice and get back at it on Monday," he added. "I'm proud of the kids. We did a lot of nice things tonight. We just have to play defense a lot better than we are right now." St. Paul entertains Crestview (6-2, 2-2) on Monday. Crestview 66, Monroeville 56 OLIVESBURG — The visiting Eagles cut the deficit to two points with 1:15 left in Wednesday's FC game, but the Cougars went 8-of-8 at the free-throw line down the stretch to put the game away. Monroeville trailed 15-10 after one quarter and 31-27 at halftime. The Cougars then edged ahead by a 45-37 margin through three quarters. The Eagles were led by Isaac Roeder with 28 points. Trevor Schafer and Jimmy Clingman each added 12 points for Monroeville, which is in action next on Monday at Seneca East. Willard 72, Edison 35 MILAN — Trey Paxton made four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Crimson Flashes to a big SBC Bay Division win over Edison. Willard (4-3, 2-1) led by 10 (18-8) after one quarter and by 13 at halftime (32-19). The Flashes then turned the game into a rout by outscoring the Chargers (0-5, 0-3) by a 40-16 margin in the second half. Austin Adelman and Max Dawson each added 13 points for Willard, while Cole Weiss scored 10. Willard is at Huron (4-2, 2-1) on Dec. 30 in a key league game.
