Matthias J. Fox Jr.

FOSTORIA — Matthias J. Fox Jr., 82, of Fostoria, passed away at 5:55 p.m. Thursday, January 14, 2021, at Good Shepherd Home, Fostoria. Did you ever wonder what happened to Cinderella after she married her Prince Charming named Matthias? They had a son on April 19, 1938, named after his father. Matthias J. Fox Jr. also went by Johnny and in later years, Matt. Matt was the only child born to Matthias J. Fox Sr. and Cinderella (Stark). In his younger years, Matt loved to bowl and reminisced about his first date with Rita Rose Kramb in which they went bowling and out to eat a steak dinner. Within two months of the first date, they were engaged and married five months later on October 14, 1961. Rita died in 2006, only two months before their 45th wedding anniversary. Matt and Rita became the proud parents of Matthias J. (Jack) Fox, III who died June 21, 1989, one day after his 27th birthday. Their daughter Mary Jo (Rivest) not only gave them a wonderful gift with their only son-in-law, Kevin, but also with the birth of their only grandchild, Emily Rose. Matt, Rita, Jack and Mary Jo welcomed their final addition to their immediate FOX DEN with the birth of their last daughter, Michelle J. (Shelly) Fox. Matt retired as a leader man in the shipping department in 1993 from National Electrical Carbon in Fostoria, formerly known as Union Carbide. He coached Little League baseball in the 1960s and was the local distributor for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Findlay's The Courier from 1965-1980. Matt's work history also included his very first job of pumping gas at Charlie's Shell Oil in the 1950s to his jobs after his retirement at Steinackers, and then becoming store manager at St. Vincent De Paul Society in Fostoria, where he also served as a board member. One of the jobs he was most proud of was "keeper of the keys" for St. Wendelin Church, in which he opened and locked the church every day, 7 days a week, from 1977 to 2019. Matt enjoyed woodworking, reading, gardening and computers, and in his retirement years became an avid K'Nex model building buff, amazing many with his creations. Matt never met a stranger and was known for his kindness and sense of humor. Matt's wish is for everyone to take a moment to share a good story about him; for after all, one of the best stories ever was what happened to Cinderella after she married her Prince Charming. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, January 18, 2021, at Hoening & Son Funeral Home, 133 W. Tiffin Street, Fostoria, Ohio 44830. A vigil will take place at 6:30 p.m. and will be livestreamed on Hoening Family Funeral Homes Facebook page. Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Wendelin Catholic Church with Fr. Joseph Poggemeyer, presiding. Burial will follow at St. Wendelin Cemetery. The Funeral Mass will be live-streamed from St. Wendelin Parish Facebook page.
