Vaccinations begin for BVC clients, providers

About 120 individuals with developmental disabilities served by Blanchard Valley Center, and some of their care providers, have received the first dose of the Moderna vaccine for COVID-19. Another 100 doses are due Wednesday. Kelli Grisham, superintendent of the center, which is operated by the Hancock County Board of Developmental Disabilities, said the vaccines are being administered at the center, 1700 E. Sandusky St. "We anticipate hosting additional clinics over the next three weeks to distribute the first phase 1A dose to those who qualify," Grisham said. "We will also host the clinics distributing the second doses." Grisham said all staff members have reported to the center throughout the pandemic, and its preschool and school have operated on a normal schedule. "Most of the individuals we support have not contracted the virus, but the few who have contracted it have recovered well," she said. "We have been very fortunate, as other counties have not had such a good outcome for people with developmental disabilities." Grisham said staff members been very cautious in their duties and while interacting with clients. "We utilize Zoom when we can and if that's not a possibility, our staff do go into homes to ensure people are healthy and safe. We also stay in contact with our residential and day providers to assist them as needed," she said. "They have been the true heroes and we are fortunate to have such dedicated professionals." Individuals with developmental disabilities are considered at high risk for severe illness from the COVID-19 virus, due to congenital health conditions that may make them more susceptible to the virus.
