City Mission seeks financial support, winter clothing

The local homeless population has been dealt a double blow, said officials at Findlay City Mission. "COVID has been a frightening ordeal for our homeless guests and our staff and volunteers. But this onslaught of snow/wind/blisteringly cold weather has made it even worse," said Joy Barger, chief development officer of the nonprofit homeless shelter. According to Healthline.com, extreme cold temperatures can cause frostbite and other dangerous complications in under 30 minutes. The very old and young are in even more danger. "Some of our homeless guests have been treated for frostbite and experienced aggravated respiratory problems due to walking in deep snow and subzero temperatures to seek shelter," Barger said. "And we are dealing with folks who already suffer from conditions like colds, sinus issues, heart conditions and arthritis." Barger said City Mission needs continued community support to operate the recently opened warming center, which allows anyone in need to shelter from the elements. In addition to financial support, donations such as hand warmers, men's gloves (L & XL) and men's sweatpants and sweatshirts in larger sizes that allow for layering are needed at this time. Due to generous donors, the Mission is fully stocked with socks, shoes, and women and children's gloves and hats, Barger said. City Mission has sheltered 60-70 guests each night in January and February, despite the challenges of safe social distancing and increased sanitation due to COVID-19.
