County expected to resume hazardous waste collection

The Hancock County Board of Commissioners gave verbal approval for the return of household hazardous waste collection, beginning next month. Courtney Comstock, operations manager at Litter Landing Recycling Center, requested renewal of the program during an update session with the commissioners Tuesday. Legislation will be prepared and the commissioners are expected to approve the action after no objections were voiced during Tuesday's meeting. Litter Landing has been closed on Mondays, but will be open regular hours, beginning April 5, for donations and continuing throughout the spring and summer. April 12 will be the first household solid waste collection of the year. The program will continue from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, through Aug. 30 (except holidays). Rader Environmental Services will operate the collection, paid with funds received from fees paid at the county landfill for dumped loads. General fund money does not pay for the collection. The service costs about $70,000 annually. The program is available for Hancock County residents only, and no businesses will be permitted to participate. Latex paints may be dried out and placed into regular trash to be disposed at a sanitary landfill. Items that will be accepted include: • Latex paint (limit 10 cans per vehicle) • Oil-based paint • Aluminum paint • Varnishes and stains • Paint thinners • Aerosols • Cleaners • Pesticides • Flammable solids • Acids • Bases • Oxidizers • Mercury • Propane cylinders • Fluorescent bulbs, with a 4-foot maximum length • Antifreeze/motor oil CFL light bulbs and rechargeable batteries can be dropped off at collection boxes in Lowe's and Home Depot stores.
