Gilbert withdraws from Findlay council race

There are now only four candidates vying for three open at-large seats on Findlay City Council in Tuesday's Republican primary election. Dr. Andre Gilbert, a political newcomer, withdrew from the race Friday, citing time constraints. Gilbert, 62, is a urologist who works with Blanchard Valley Hospital. This would have been his first bid for a public office. Gilbert said his candidacy was well-received by the Hancock County Republican Party and that he enjoyed time spent campaigning and meeting the other candidates. "I have only good things to say about all of them," he said. Gilbert's name will still appear on the ballot citywide, but each precinct is expected to post a notice about his withdrawal. Votes cast for Gilbert on Tuesday will be considered invalid. The race, however, remains contested. Incumbent councilmen Grant Russel and Jeff Wobser are seeking reelection, and are being challenged by current 5th Ward Councilman Randy Greeno, and former 1st Ward Councilwoman Holly Frische. Tom Shindledecker, now serving his fourth term as an at-large councilman, is not seeking reelection. No Democrats filed for the primary election. Independent candidates have until Monday to file for the Nov. 2 general election. Findlay's council president and council members serve two-year terms and are being paid $7,616 this year.
