McComb's Bailey wins two more events at Findlay district meet

Columbus Grove was well ahead of the field in the boys team standings, but photo finishes were more the norm in several events as the area's top sprinters took to the track for the Division III district meet at Findlay High on Friday.McComb's Ka'Von Bailey, who won a district long jump title on Wednesday, won two more events on Friday. Neither one came easy as just .23 of a second separated the top runners in the 100-meter dash and .19 separated the top three in the 200.Bailey ran an 11.35 in the 100 to edge Arlington's Elijah Evans (2nd, 11.41) and Noah Thibaut (4th, 11.52), and Pandora-Gilboa's Gavin Biery (3rd, 11.49).In the 200, Bailey (22.94), Arlington's Connor Foust (23.09) and Columbus Grove's Josh Smith (23.23) were 1-2-3.Arlington's depth in the sprints paid off in the relays where Foust, Thibaut, Evans and the two Jacobs — Branan in the 400, Price in the 800 — won both events, posting a time of 43.94 in the 400 and 1:32.26 in the 800.The top four individuals and relay teams advance from the Findlay District to next week's Division III regional meet at Tiffin.Thanks to strong showing in Wednesday's events, including wins in the shot put (A.J. Schafer), pole vault (Gabe Clement) and 3,200 relay, Columbus Grove entered Friday's final with a bit of a lead and expanded it from there. Ethan Halker won the discus with a throw of 175-11 and Grove's depth allowed the Bulldogs to double-up in several events. Grove won the district title with 170 points. Bluffton was second (102.5) and Van Buren (61) edged Arlington (60.5) by half a point for third.In a back-and-forth battle in the girls meet, Columbus Grove and Kalida traded the lead almost event by event. Grove eventually won the title over its Putnam County neighbor with 103 points. Kalida had 97.333 points, with Hopewell-Loudon (65_ taking third over Leipsic (61.33) in the 16-team field.Bluffton displayed its strength in the mid- and long distances races with Jonathan Schriner winning the 400 (51.93), Simon Derstine the 800 (1:56.77), Eden Antrim the 1,600 (4:31.32) and Eric Nygard the 3,200 (10:00.44).Bluffton's Ethan Bogart was second in the w300-meter intermediate hurdles (41.47), then teamed with Antrim, Schriner and Josh Mehaffie to win the 1,600 relay (3:28.71).In a photo finish in the 110 high hurdles, Pandora-Gilboa's Samuel Burkholder (15.61) nipped Grove Jon Banal (15.62) by .01 of a second.Leipsic's Peyton Heitmeyer, the girls MVP of the Blanchard Valley Conference meet a week ago, punched her ticket to regionals in four events on Wednesday, with Vanlue's Emma Franks qualifying in three.Heitmeyer won the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 9-1/2 inches. She was second (59.08) to Franks (58.76) in the 400, and third in both the 100 (13.22) and 200 (27.24).In addition to her win in the 400, Franks was second to Kalida's Hannah Berheide in both the 100 (13.06) and 200 (26.56).Grove's Kennedy Flowers completed the Bulldogs' sweep of the throws on Friday, winning the shot with a heave of 40-3-3.4 after finishing second to teammate Faith Anderson in the discus on Wednesday. At Colonel CrawfordNORTH ROBINSON — Carey's Alaina Tiell factored in four first-place finishes and Sarah Reinhart was a double winner as the Blue Devils finished second in the girls standings of the Division III district track meet at Colonel Crawford High School.Colonel Crawford outpointed Carey 125 to 104.5 for the girls title. Riverdale was fourth (67) and Hardin Northern 12th (14).In the boys portion of the meet, Ashland Crestview was a run-away winner with 158.5 points, more than double the total of runner-up Seneca East (75). Carey was eighth (27), Hardin Northern tenth (20) and Riverdale 11th (18).Tiell won the 400-meter dash (59.09) and ran a 27.41 to edge Riverdale's Alyssa Tackett (27.25) in the 200. Tiell also teamed with Macy Wentling, Ellison Roark and Lexi Plott to capture the 800 relay (1:44.89), and with Roark, Wentling and Nellie Bianchi on the winning 1,600 relay (4:10.58).Reinhart continued to dominate her specialties, winning the 1,600 in a meet record time of 5:10.13 and the 3,200 in 11:58.19 ahead of teammate Juliana Boes (12:30.79).Riverdale's Alyssa Tackett qualified for the Tiffin Regional in three events. She teamed with Stella Phillips, Auhdra Myers and Ella Roach to win the 400 relay (51.74), joined Phillips, Myers and Kendall Rall on the runner-up 800 relay (1:48.74) and placed third in the long jump (16-4-3/4).Carey's 400 relay and Riverdale's 1,600 team also qualified for the regional with third-place finishes.Riverdale's Daniel Donaldson, who was second in the boys 400 (52.25), and Brayden Courtney in the 300 hurdles (3rd, 42.45) also advanced, along with Carey's Anthony Bell in the 800 (3rd, 2:02.37) and high jump (4th, 6-0). At DefianceDEFIANCE — Ottawa-Glandorf's Alexa Fortman set a meet record in the 400 (58.24), won the 800 as well (2:20.61) and teamed with Olivia Fenbert, Myka Aldrich and Lily Haselman on the winning 1,600 relay (4:08.55) during Division II district track competition at Defiance.Haselman also qualified for next week's Division II regional at Lexington with a second-place finish in the pole vault (10-4). Ella Okuley advanced in by placing fourth in both the 100 (17.68) and 300 (50.81) hurdles.For O-G's boys, Gavin Hedrick won the 110 hurdles (15.38) and Trevor Cantrell earned regional spots by placing second in the 200 (23.40), third in the 100 (11.61) and third in the 800 relay (1:34.59) with Hedrick, Landon Morman and Alec Schroeder.
