Suspects no more?

FREMONT — Deputies arrested a prime suspect Thursday, charging Daniel R. Myers with aggravated murder in the April 2015 killing of 28-year-old Heather Bogle. But the fate of three others — named "persons of interest" by former sheriff's detective Sean P. O'Connell — isn't clear. At one time, O'Connell said he had a list of "persons of interest," but he named just three people as suspects: Omar Satchel, Keyona Bor and Kayree "Manny" Jeffery. All three denied having any involvement in Bogle's death. They also claimed they were being harassed by the detective, in one way or another. Jeffery said he was unequivocally cleared and O'Connell knew it even as he released his name to the public, calling him a suspect in Bogle's murder. "As soon as my name came up (in the investigation) I volunteered to talk with police. I provided DNA samples. I told them where I was. They checked my alibi," he told the Register in April 2016. O'Connell was forced out as a deputy last year after numerous allegations were raised about how he was handling the Bogle investigation. Bogle's family complained, other police leaders became concerned and general dysfunction in the investigation and inside the sheriff's office was being widely reported by the Register. The detective quit his job in September 2016 rather than face potential termination or other disciplinary action related to the alleged wrongdoing. O'Connell remains under investigation, however, for allegedly releasing confidential files related to the Bogle investigation, confidential financial records from the sheriff's office, and releasing the names of confidential informants and targets in drug investigations to friends. The former detective also is being investigated for other, undisclosed alleged improprieties, according the Sandusky County Sheriff Chris Hilton.Satchel was convicted on a weapons violation in March 2016 and sentenced to prison. State records show he is incarcerated at the Richland Correctional Facility in Mansfield with a release date scheduled for May 2018. O'Connell said a handgun owned by Satchel's then girlfriend, Margaret Simms, which turned up missing, might have been the weapon used to kill Bogle. Satchel was convicted in Sandusky County Court even though the weapon was never located, or reported stolen. She had been brutally assaulted and shot in the chest.Simms, now Margaret Satchel, spoke to a reporter from 13ABC news in Toledo on Friday about Satchel, who is now husband, saying the ordeal has been "very rough on my children, very rough on his family and him and me both."In an interesting twist of fate, O'Connell, former Sheriff Kyle Overmyer and former county Prosecutor Tom Stierwalt all were driven out from office last year as a result of the heat brought down on them by families and the public: The sheriff and his detective under a cloud of criminal wrongdoing suspicion and other improper behavior, and Stierwalt at the ballot box.Tim Braun, a private attorney who served as Satchel's defense counsel during his 2016 trial, beat Stierwalt's re-election bid. Braun told the Toledo news station on Friday he had no idea why Satchel could have ever been called a "person of interest," or suspect. The TV-13 news report stated Braun told the reporter there has never been any evidence to charge Satchel with murder."Braun says he doesn't know why any law enforcement would have made a public declaration saying Satchel was a suspect but never charging him," the article states. Bor, too, felt burned by O'Connell after the detective called her out as a potential suspect. O'Connell had numerous, different interactions with her. In addition to searches at her home, deputies twice interviewed her, spoke with her employer and questioned her co-workers, family and friends.Officials also obtained a warrant and took a sample of Bor's DNA, she said.Keyona Bor, one of two suspects in Heather Bogle's homicide, according to Detective Sean O'Connell. "I just want my life back," she told the Register, referring to the extreme stress she said O'Connell created for her and her family when he falsely accused her.The detective never did explain how Satchel, Bor and Jeffry were connected to Bogle's slaying, and the investigative report he leaked to friends has never been made available to the public. He also never sought charges directly related to Bogle's death against anyone during the 17 months he and Overmyer were in charge of the probe. Sheriff Hilton, who like Braun was elected last year and took office in January, said the Bogle investigation was his No.1 priority coming into office. He made an arrest in just over five months investigating the cold case. Sheriff Overmyer and O'Connell had a long pockmarked history together, including botching numerous other investigations in addition to the Bogle homicide. Their mutual demise came last year after they turned on each other in the heat brought on by intense news coverage, primarily from the Register.O'Connell "investigated" Overmyer beginning in August 2015 after he got wind the county's six police chiefs reported that prescription medications from community drop-off boxes at police stations were being stolen by the sheriff.In June 2016, Overmyer asked the Lorain County sheriff's office to investigate O'Connell's alleged mishandling of the Bogle investigation and documents related to it. The special prosecutor succeeded where Stierwalt and DeWine failed, convicting the now former sheriff on felony theft and drug charges last last year.Overmyer is serving a four-year prison term at the Allen Correctional Facility in Lima. The investigator looking at the allegations against O'Connell determined he leaked the confidential investigative records, financial records and names of sources, which led to the detective's decision to resign in September rather than be fired or face other disciplinary action. It's not clear whether he will face any criminal charges. Hilton declined any comment about O'Connell's work on Bogle's homicide, which happened before he became sheriff. "For very specific reasons I don't want to discuss any part of the original investigation at this time," Hilton said SaturdayHe said additional information is likely to become available in the future. Myers, who has no known connection to Satchel, Bor or Jeffery, was arrested after Hilton and his investigators served search warrants for social media account and at Myers home at the Emerald Estates mobile home park in Clyde last month. They have since re-opened another death investigation from 2009. Myers discovered the body of his ex-wife, according to an incident report. Her death was later ruled a suicide. Daniel R.
