McComb Mayor Schroll rolls to victory

McCOMB — McComb Mayor Cathy Schroll won 53% of the vote in Tuesday's general election in a bid to retain her job. Schroll received 181 votes to 161 for Gordon Myers. Results from the Hancock County Board of Elections on Tuesday were unofficial and included absentee voting. Schroll inherited a village in disarray and financial difficulties when she went from council member to mayor in December 2020. She succeeded Myers, who resigned as mayor. Myers had become mayor only a few months earlier when Charles Latta resigned as mayor. Schroll's election Tuesday means she will complete the unexpired term Latta was elected to in 2019. That term expires at year-end 2023. Besides working on stabilizing village finances, Schroll, 63, is leading efforts to minimize flooding through storm sewer improvements. She also has set up a street improvement plan for the village with help from Hancock County Engineer Doug Cade. Village residents became upset when the police force, which numbered three officers to start the year, dwindled to zero by April. Since then, the village has added an officer. Village officials have been considering adding a second police officer, but Schroll has been concerned about whether the village can afford that. Residents also have complained about the village pool being open for limited hours last season. Schroll cited limited village finances and a lifeguard shortage as factors in that situation. Schroll is a retired educator. She taught at McComb and Cory-Rawson school districts for 17 years. Much of that time was spent teaching fifth grade. She was also an administrator for 18 years. Seven of those years were with the Hancock County Educational Service Center. She then spent two years as assistant principal/athletic director at Central Middle School in Findlay, then nine years as principal for grades seven through 12 at Arcadia.
