Richard D. Shaferly

Richard D. Shaferly, 77, of Alvada, passed away peacefully at 11:15 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, 2022, at Blanchard Blanchard Valley Hospital, Findlay, with his family by his side. Richard was born April 6, 1944, in Tiffin, the son of Harlan and Ruth (Vrooman) Shaferly. Upon graduating from Vanlue High School in 1962, Richard began his dream job. He spent the next 60 years doing what he loved, grain and livestock farming. He turned dirt, and raised cattle, hogs, chickens, and fish. He also worked at National Lime and Stone and Vanlue Grain and Supply, where he served on the board for several years. He enjoyed making fresh whole hog sausage for over 20 years and donated the proceeds to different missions. Richard was a trustee, and secretary and treasurer of Hancock County Camp meeting and attended Bible Methodist Church, Findlay. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking and tinkering in his shop. He was always quick to volunteer whenever he saw a need. It didn't matter if it was family or a friend. Richard could always be counted on to lend a helping hand. Richard married the love of his life, Susan Walter, Sept. 20, 1964. You rarely saw one without the other for 57 loving years. He is survived by two sons, Dennis (Johnna) Shaferly of Vanlue and Jerry (Missy) Shaferly of Alvada; daughter, Kathy (Daniel) Huskins of Arlington; five grandchildren, Olivia Shaferly, Makenzy Shaferly, and Hayden Shaferly, Scott Huskins, and Mary Huskins; two brothers, David (Marilyn) Shaferly and Stephen (Christine) Shaferly; sister, Jane Shaferly; son in-law, Daniel Rohdy; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Rebecca Sue Rohdy; and grandson, Benjamin Scott Huskins. Richard's funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022, at Bible Methodist Church, Findlay, with Pastor Travis Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Hickory Grove Cemetery, near Alvada. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Bible Methodist Church or charity of the donor's choice and sent to the funeral home.
