Trenkamp's third period power play goal propels Findlay past Perrysburg

After having the lead for almost two entire periods, Findlay squandered it when Perrysburg's Cody Schneider fired one in the back of the net, making it 1-1 with 14:42 left in the third frame. Less than five minutes later, Ross Trenkamp gave the Trojans the lead back with a power-play goal to make it 2-1. They held firm the rest of the way, scored one more time and picked up the 3-1 win over the Yellow Jackets on Friday. "The puck was sitting right there — I don't even think the goalie knew that the puck was there—and I just saw an opportunity," Trenkamp said of his goal. "The net was pretty open and I banged it home for the game-winning goal. That was pretty key for us." The first of two power plays Findlay had in the third had to be converted, Findlay's head coach says. Especially with how the game was going. "It was a pretty tight checking game, a very clean game but obviously we knew that they were gonna give us all we could handle," Findlay coach Ben Patey said. "We knew we had to make that power play good because the chances were few and far between tonight, so we were just happy to get the win." Findlay finished 1 of 2 on power-play attempts. "They kept pressing — and more power to them, they got the tie there — but on the power play, we beared down and buried one," Patey continued. And despite squandering a lead, the Trojans felt confident late in the game. "I think coach just bangs us on adversity and he says when you face adversity and they come back like that, we gotta keep playing and stick to our systems," Trenkamp said. "I thought we did that tonight, we played well." Ryker Featheringham opened the scoring just two minutes into the game. Michael Armstrong capped off the game with an empty-netter with a minute left. The Trojans have (Olentangy Liberty, 5-2 on Monday) lost just one game in their last 13 tries and improved their record to 14-7-4 on the season. "In our recent stretch, we've just trusted each other and we've trusted the system. Coach gave us a new system in practice and it's been working for us," sophomore goalie Seth Russell said. "We could a 1-2-2 or switch it up. We do two-down and three on the blue line and it works well for us. We score goals on that system." Russell gave up just one goal in front of the net for the Trojans. "He's been turning in on lately," Patey said of Russell's play at goalie. "He's been stopping pucks and he works hard in practice — as do all our goalies — and to be successful in this league, you gotta have strong goaltending and we certainly have that."
