Findlay swimmer Wilt earns all-Ohio honors in 4 events

CANTON — Findlay High senior Selby Wilt earned all-Ohio recognition in all four events he and his teammates competed in on Saturday during the 2022 Division I state swimming championships held at C.T. Branin Natatorium, in Canton. Wilt qualified for Saturday's A finals in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. He finished seventh in the 50 with a time of 20.82, and eighth in the 100 in 47.06. Wilt joined fellow seniors Parker Stocker, Ben Williams and Xavier Doering on two relays that competed in the B finals, placing 14th in the 200 free relay (1:27.67) and 15th in the 400 free relay (3:12.26). Stocker also swam in the finals of the 100 backstroke, finishing 16th in 52.23. WRESTLING Mitchell wins title, 6 Trojans qualify for district OREGON – Findlay's Ethan Mitchell won an individual championship, and five other Trojans punched their tickets for next week's district meet with their performances at Saturday's Division I sectional in Oregon. Mitchell, FHS' 138-pound junior, stormed through his weight class, scoring three consecutive pins. In the finals, he flattened Anthony Wayne's Parker Frederick in 1:33 for the crown. Findlay placed fourth in the team standings with 165 points. It trailed Perrysburg (300 1/2), Clay (205) and Anthony Wayne 188) In addition, the Trojans received a runner-up finish from 175-pounder Keegan Klotz, who won his first two matches by pin before reaching the finals and falling to Perrysburg's Jackson Hawker. Hawker claimed the title by pinning Klotz in 1:27. The top four finishers in each weight class advanced to next Saturday's district meet in Perrysburg. Findlay's Will Jolliff (120), John Paul Smith (144) and Tyler Treft (190) all advanced to next week with third-place finishes, while the Trojans' Caden Freyman (157) kept his season alive with a fourth-place finish. FHS received fifth-place finishes from Will Johnston (113), Tyler Barnes (126), Austin Sertell (150) and Skylar Scott (165). VAN BUREN DISTRICT VAN BUREN – Elmwood and Liberty-Benton's wrestling teams were in a number of competitions Saturday at the Division III sectional meet in Van Buren. The teams themselves may not even have been aware of all of them. But in the end, it was Elmwood that came out ahead in the team standings, defeating the Eagles 208-200 ½ for the team title. The Royals and L-B each finished with three individual champions. Elmwood's Cannon Endicott (165), a state placer from a year ago, was one of them. He won the final by forfeit over Carey's Gage Summit, advancing to next week's district meet in Rossford. The top four finishers in each weight class moved on. Elmwood finished with 10 district qualifiers; Liberty-Benton eight. Also winning titles for the Royals was Peyton Schafer at 120 pounds. He earned the crown by scoring a 12-5 decision over Liberty-Benton's Zach Ponx in the finals. One-hundred-forty-four-pounder Frank Blair claimed the Royals other title. In his championship match, he notched a 5-0 decision over Van Buren's Aiden Mowrey. Liberty-Benton's first title came from Will Pask, who got past Elmwood's Grady Nekoranec, 6-1, in the 106-pound final. The Eagles' second championship came at 126 pounds, where Lee Woods grinded out a 13-10 win over the Black Knights' Landyn Lowery. The last L-B individual champion was the undefeated 215-pounder Brett Ogborn, who moved to 27-0 with a technical fall and a pair of pins. In the finals, he knocked off Carey's Isaac Carmen in 2:23. Van Buren placed third in the team standings, doing it on the strength of five district qualifiers. The Black Knights' Collin Wagner won the title at 157 pounds, pinning Bluffton's Kyle Basil in the final in just under two minutes. Other area wrestlers winning sectional titles included Hopewell-Loudon's Lance Crawford (132), McComb's Montana Pierce (150), Bluffton's Kadin Basil (175, a 2021 state placer) Arcadia's Ryland Ernest (190) and Carey's Brock Bushong (285). He didn't win, but he did advance to next week's district tournament. A few of his teammates will be going with him. Baldwin had the Rams' top finish, losing by pin to Ontario's Jacob Ohl in 1:54. His runner-up finish was the best among area grapplers, and he will be joined at next week's district by four other Rams, each who attained fourth-place finishes: Frank Depinet (126), Carson Barrows (132), Karon Alban (175) and Aidan Gallant (190). Also getting two district qualifiers was Fostoria, which was led by Elijah Kiser, who finished third at 150 pounds. James Sims (144) finished fourth for the Redmen. The top four finishers in each weight class advance to next week's district meet in Norwalk. One other area athlete qualified for the Division II district meet: Ottawa-Glandorf 144-pounder Owen Thomas, who placed third in Defiance. LIMA DISTRICT LIMA – Columbus Grove's Landen Schroeder topped all area finishers at the Division III sectional at Lima Senior. Schroeder pinned Parkway's Logan Green in five minutes to claim the 157-pound championship. He will be joined at next week's district by teammates Boat Thompson (120) and Zane Stechschulte (132), who each finished third, and by Kyle Lathrop (175), who took fourth. Also qualifying for next week's district meet was Ada's Clayton McClain, who took third at 126 pounds.
