Warren and Patricia Smith

Warren R. Smith, 78, and Patricia (Pat) A. Smith, 78, of Huntsville, passed away Monday, March 7, 2022. Warren and Pat shared a beautiful life together on Indian Lake. They met when they were attending Ohio Northern University and were married for 56 wonderful years. Warren and Pat were so proud of their amazing family. It was the most important part of their lives. They were devoted and loving parents to Cheryl L. Watkins of Auburn, Washington, and Amy L. McMillion of Columbus; grandparents to Ashley of Tukwila, Washington, Jake of Kent, Washington, Sydney of Gahanna, and Evan of Columbus; and great-grandparents to Carter of Tukwila, Washington. Warren, son of Wellington and Florence Smith, grew up in Ada, with his brother, Wayne of Rock Hill, North Carolina, and sister, Cathy, of Cornville, Arizona. He graduated from Ohio Northern with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering and achieved his Professional Engineering License in Columbus. Warren could always find a better way of doing things. He had a knack for discovering how things work and solving problems. He used these skills during his long successful career in Civil Engineering. He worked for E. J. Meyer & Sons, Ottawa, and retired from The Shelly Company, Toledo. Warren was an avid fisherman. He fell in love with Indian Lake. What started 40 years ago with cabin rentals at O'Connor's Landing ended with their dream home on the lake. On many afternoons, he could be found with a fishing pole in one hand and a martini in the other. Warren's smile and heartfelt love of people will be remembered by everyone he has ever met. Pat, daughter of Maurice and Catherine Patterson, grew up in Dayton. She graduated from Ohio Northern with a bachelor of science degree in education. She received her master's degree from University of Dayton. Pat dedicated her life to the educational opportunities for the children of Putnam County. She was a key educational leader for over three decades. Her career began with teaching social studies at Pandora-Gilboa High School. Later in her career, Pat taught students at Ottawa-Glandorf with learning disabilities. Then, she became a gifted education teacher. In 1985, she went to Educational Service Center to be a Gifted and Curriculum coordinator. Pat was instrumental in everything she did, from updating the curriculum, writing grants, and working one-to-one with teachers. Pat loved cooking for people. Pat's memory, influence, and spirit will continue in the many students, teachers, administrators, coworkers, and people whose lives she has touched over the years. Warren and Pat were beloved lifelong friends to many. They never met a stranger. They began their family in Pandora and were longtime residents of Ottawa. They were involved in the community through various organizations such as Indian Lake BPOE Lodge #2792 and Indian Lake Moose Lodge #1533. Fish Fries on Friday nights at VFW Post 9142, Ottawa, were a family affair. Warren and Pat were extraordinary people who will be greatly missed. Warren and Pat's memorial service will be 4 p.m. Sunday, March 13, 2022, at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, 10879 State Route 12, Columbus Grove, 45830, with Pastor Rich Rakay presiding.
