Findlay girls 'learning the game of lacrosse' in first HS season

The scoreboard after Friday's lacrosse game at Elmer Graham Stadium read Oregon Clay 12, Findlay 4.And while, technically, that goes as an 'L' on Findlay High's schedule, Claire Ferrell has another definition for that letter."We're learning the game of lacrosse," Ferrell said. "Learning to catch and learning to throw."This is the first time there's been a high school program. The girls are brand new, but they're sticking it up, their having fun, they're enjoying the game."Oregon Clay's experience with the game showed as the Eagles doubled Findlay's scoring in the first half. The final 25 minutes was more evenly played, with some solid defense and some key saves on both ends of the field.A club sport the past there years, Findlay's boys and girls lacrosse teams have full varsity status this spring. Ferrell, the Trojans' girls coach and a former all-league goalie for the University of Findlay who had 319 career saves, admits it's still a work in progress."We're working a lot on fundamentals, the IQ part of lacrosse like how the game works, positioning of the game, just a lot of basics right now," she said.Senior Rheanna Patterson scored three goals against Oregon Clay and Rachel Hammer, another senior, had three assists. Elizabeth Holman, a junior, had Findlay's other goal. Freshman goalie Addison Kokensprager made eight saves, and typifies the multi-class dimension of the team."We had a club team the past three years," Ferrell said."A lot of these seniors did play on that team so we do have some experience, but we also have 18 freshmen and a lot of those freshmen and really making an impact. That's good for the future. It looks promising."Findlay's girls team is back in action on Tuesday when the Trojans travel to Toledo St. Ursula.
