List: Lake Erie's best beaches in local area

VERMILION — The region made a great, big splash on a nationwide list ranking Lake Erie's best beaches. PureWow — a digital media company that publishes women's lifestyle content — recently wrote an article highlighting what it considers "The 12 Best Lake Erie Beaches in Ohio and Pennsylvania." From the dozen, seven public waterfront properties occupy a 40-mile stretch between Port Clinton and Vermilion. Among them, with excerpts on each from the publication, in no particular order: • Port Clinton City Beach: "This 2,180-foot-long beach is ideal for lengthy strolls and anyone looking to sit back and relax with a good book for an afternoon." • Main Street Beach, Vermilion: "Swing on hammocks at nearby Wakefield MetroPark or watch the boats come in from Lake Erie from Harbor View Park." • Kelleys Island State Park: "Take a dip after a day of hiking, kayaking or fishing. We recommend a fall visit so you can witness the monarch butterfly migration." • Nickel Plate Beach, Huron: "As the largest public swimming beach in Ohio, Nickel Plate offers plenty of room for big groups and small ones. There are beach volleyball nets for active types and a playground for kids." • East Harbor State Park, Lakeside-Marblehead: "Unlike some Lake Erie beaches, this one is known for being a bit calmer (or) little-kid-friendly. There's a legit disc golf course for anyone looking to show off their frisbee skills." • Cedar Point Beach, Sandusky: "Soft, clean sand and a wide expanse of lakefront make for an ideal day." • South Bass Island State Park, Put-in-Bay: "There are tons of educational opportunities and several state parks ripe for exploring."
