Findlay library plans first craft swap

Do you have a passel of pompoms packed away in the playroom, caboodles of construction paper crammed in cupboards, gobs of googly eyes gathered in the garage and buttons in bulk under the bed? If you're a crafter whose stash of supplies is overflowing, Devin Orpurt, adult services associate at the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library, may be able to help. The library is hosting its first craft supplies swap on May 25 in the Lindamood Room. "It's a great idea especially since it's spring cleaning time," said Orpurt, "Craft supplies are expensive these days so if you get it for free, it's even better." She said the Upper Sandusky Community Library held a similar event in March, so she decided to try hosting a swap in connection with the monthly CrafterWork program. The library began offering craft classes for teens and adults in April 2019. "I know CrafterWork is for trying crafts," Orpurt said. "But I also think people would benefit from getting their own supplies without having to pay for it and trying it at home." In preparation for the event, patrons can bring in their excess crafting supplies during library hours May 16-20. Donations may be turned in at the reference desk or at the book donation areas located on the lower level of the library and in the garage. Orpurt said people can bring anything they have that can be used for crafting that is in good condition and clean. She asked that smaller like items such as beads or buttons be placed in bags. "I think it will be fun to see what comes in," she said. "I think there are some really creative people in this town so we'll see what happens." Orpurt predicted the swap will draw yarn from knitters and fabric from sewers and quilters. "I think they usually have some good fabrics hiding in their house somewhere," she said, laughing. The swap is planned from 4-7 p.m. May 25 in the Lindamood Room. However, supplies may spill over into the Blanchard Room if there's a large amount, Orpurt said. All ages are encouraged to come, browse and take what they want the day of the swap. Those attending should bring their own bags or boxes to carry their new crafting materials home. Orpurt said there's no limit to how much people can take and they need not have donated any materials in order to participate. Orpurt will go through any leftover items to see if they can be used by the library. If not, these supplies will be donated to charity.
