UF women's tennis falls in first round of national tourney

BOLIVAR. Mo. – A comeback win at second singles and an overtime win at No. 3 sparked Southwest Baptist University to a 4-2 win over the University of Findlay on Friday in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Division II National Tournament being played in Bolivar, Mo. A No. 2 singles, SBU's Paula Ballesteros rallied to beat Elina Ivanova 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. Southwest Baptist got another key victory at No. 3 singles where Elsa Pasqual edged UF's Samantha Sweet 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5). SBU got the other wins it needed to take the match when Diana Cabrera beat UF's Laiying Alvarado 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Ghasa Dirninger (No. 4) scored a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Zuzanna Krygier. Alvarado and Sweet at No. 1 doubles and Krygier and Emily Hadler at No. 3 won matches to earn UF one point in doubles. The Oilers' other point came at No. 5 singles, where Lucianna Pereyra beat SBU's Lola Cincunegui 6-2, 6-4. Oilers make move at regional NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – On Thursday, the lack of light kept the University of Findlay from moving up the leaderboard of the NCAA D-II Midwest/Central Regional at the Purgatory Golf Club. On Friday, nothing could. The Oilers were midway through the second round and sat in 11th place before action resumed. But the time UF finished, it sat in fifth and are in a position to make the D-II National Championships. But like Dom Guarnieri said a few weeks ago, anyone could win this regional. And so far, his words are holding true. With six spots up for grabs, there are 11 teams within nine shots of each other. Arkansas Tech sits in third at 593 (+17) and Tiffin University is in 13th at 602 (+26). In between those schools are McKendree, Findlay, Indianapolis, Missouri-St. Louis, Southern Indiana, Trevecca Nazarene, Wayne State, Rogers State and Harding. Parker Haynes (+1) is in a tie for 12th, closing out his second round on Friday by shooting two-under on his final eight holes and finished at even-par for the Oilers. Tanner Grzegorczyk climbed five spots on the individual leaderboard to a tie for 25th. He closed his second round by playing six holes at even-par to shoot 76 (+4), giving him a two-round total of 148 (+4). Donnie Professori and Brock Kehres both carded a 75 in their second rounds. Professori closed his day with a birdie on the final hole while Kehres played the remainder of his day at even-par. Professori is in T-48 at 151 and Kehres is T-54 at 152. (14-sub head) Tagliapietra scores ace FOSTORIA – Tim Tagliapietra scored a hole-in-one at the Fostoria Country Club on Thursday, acing the 120-yard No. 9 with a 7-iron. Witnessing the shot were Dave Tweed, Dave Gary and Tim Marshall.
