Findlay High tennis secures TRAC crown

MAUMEE – They handed Findlay High's boys tennis team the 2022 Three Rivers Athletic Conference championship trophy on Monday. FHS coach Sean Swisher feels they could have started etching Findlay's name on the plaque a long time back. "We knew we had six of our top seven players back, but we never took anything for granted," Swisher said. "These guys came in early in the morning. They put in the work all winter long. I'm really proud of the time and effort they put in to get where they are now." Following a 7-0 run through regular season TRAC matches, Findlay needed a solid showing in the TRAC tournament to complete its championship season. The Trojans got that, with Max Hosey at No. 1 singles, Austin Asada at No. 2 and the No. 2 doubles team of Sam Swisher and Haden Harris winning their flights. Findlay finished the TRAC tournament with 38 points. Toledo St. John's, which had won eight of the previous nine TRAC titles, including last year's when the Titans used a strong run in the tournament to edge Findlay by one point in the final overall standings, scored 35. In the final 2022 standings, Findlay finished with 28 team points. St. John's had 24, Oregon Clay 19 and Toledo St. Francis 17. It wasn't as walk-away easy as it might seem, though. Hosey, the defending TRAC Player of the Year, lost his first set to Tyler Wood of Toledo St. John's 7-5 and trailed the Titans' junior 5-2 and was down 40-15 in the second. Hosey rallied, though, winning the second set 7-6 (7-3), then taking the third 6-1 to defend his Player of the Year title. Asada, 2021 TRAC champion at No. 3 singles, also won a second straight individual title, beating Oregon Clay's Cody Keller 6-3, 6-2 in their No. 2 singles final. Sam Swisher and Harris were tested as well before scoring a 6-4, 6-2 win over the St. Francis No. 2 double steam of Owen Little and Aaron Levine. Even in their setbacks, the Trojans battled. Mac Robertson was down 5-1 in the second set, but rallied to force overtime before Nathan Allen of St. John's pulled out a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) victory. St. John's did earn another win at No. 1 doubles where Rafa Yazji and Jonathan To topped Arda Dastan and Nick Simmermeyer 6-4, 6-0. "Every match pretty much ended up being a dog fight," Sean Swisher said. "Max fought off four match points and came back. Mac was down 5-1 and took it to overtime. We took their best punch, but I'm really proud of our guys' effort. I think that shows the character these guys bring to the table, and that rubs off on a program as a whole." ADA 3 U. (14-sub head) UF selected Despite an earlier-than-planned exit from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament, the University of Findlay softball team received an at-large bid to compete in the NCAA Division Midwest Region playoffs. Owning a school-record 36-14 record that included an 18-game midseason winning streak, UF is seeded No. 7 for the Midwest Region and will face No. 2-seeded and regional host University of Indianapolis at 11 a.m. Thursday. It will the UF program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament. Grand Valley St. (No. 3) and fellow GMAC tournament champion Ohio Dominican (No. 6) will play at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. The four-team double-elimination tournament will conclude on Saturday with the winner advancing to play a best-of-three series against the winner of the midwest region's other bracket that includes Southern Indiana (No. 1), Saginaw Valley State (No. 8), Lindenwood (No. 4) and Drury (No. 5).
