Stamp Out Hunger food drive supplies local pantries

Saturday is the 30th anniversary of the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Every year on the second Saturday in May, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers collect nonperishable food donations from their customers. Locally, donated food will be processed for safety by West Ohio Food Bank and then returned to the food pantries in Hancock County including CHOPIN Hall, Lutheran Social Services, City Mission and Salvation Army. To participate in the food drive, community members are asked to leave nonperishable food items in a plastic or paper bag by the home's mailbox by 8 a.m. Saturday. Local letter carriers and volunteers will collect the items. Donations can also be dropped off in the back parking lot of Great Scot on West Main Cross Street, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Great Scot will also be donating food for the volunteers and letter carriers after their shifts. It is estimated that nationwide, more than 42 million Americans don't have enough food. More than 12 million are children, and over 5 million are seniors. United Way of Hancock County is assisting the local USPS AFL-CIO chapter with the coordination of volunteers. Up to 50 volunteers and volunteers with about 20 vehicles are needed to assist the drivers with collecting donations throughout Findlay. LGBTQ+ Spectrum of Findlay is also assisting with volunteer efforts. Volunteers will be assigned to neighborhoods or regions in the community to drive through and pick up donations.
