Trojan tennis' Hosey, Robertson and Asada all advance to district semifinals

PORT CLINTON – The Findlay High doubles team of Max Hosey and Mac Robertson and singles player Austin Asada have all advanced to Saturday's semifinals of the Division I district tennis tournament after posting straight-set wins in Wednesday's first- and second-round matches in Port Clinton. Following a first-round bye, Hosey and Roberston rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Tiffin Columbian's Jacob Weingart and Trey Shuey. In Saturday's semifinals, they will be matched against the Toledo St. John's tandem of Tyler Wood and Jack Oswald. Asada needed to win two matches to advance, and did so impressively with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Sylvania's Northview's Gavin Binni and a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Tiffin Columbian's Brian Siesel. Asada will face Sylvania Southview freshman Isaac Vens in Saturday's semifinal round. Only the top singles player and championship doubles team will advance from the district to the state tournament to be held May 27-28 at The Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason. Findlay had a second doubles team in the district meet, but Sam Swisher and Nick Simmermeyer fell to Raphael Yazji and Nathan Allen of Toledo St. John's 6-3, 6-4 in the second round. Along with the OHSAA singles and doubles competition, Findlay will be looking to win a second straight Northwest District regional championship in the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association team tournament. The Trojans will be at Sylvania Northview today for a second-round match in that event. Oilers place 14th in NCAA championships. DETROIT – The University of Findlay men's golf team completed the 2022 season with a 14th-place finish in the 2022 NCAA Division II National Championship held at the TPC Michigan after finishing the three-day tournament with a 916 team total. Donnie Professori (78-79-72) led the Oilers with a 229 total and he finished in 46th place. He was one shot ahead of teammates Parker Haynes (79-75-76) and Justin Atkinson (72-78-80), who finished in 51st. Tanner Grzegorczyk (76-79-77) carded a 232 to finish in 65th. Brock Kehres (80-77-77) a 234 and finished in 70th place. O-G's Hoffman won discus throw DEFIANCE – Ottawa-Glandorf's Emma Hoffman won the discus with a throw of 134 feet, 5 inches Wednesday in the Division II district track and field meet held in Defiance.Five of Hoffman's teammates also placed among the top four in their events, qualifying them for next week's regional meet. Myka Aldrich was third in the high jump (4-8), and Madelyn Hovest, Lily Haselman, Rose Turnwald and Olivia Fenbert were third in the 3,200 relay.The Division II district meet at Defiance will wrap up Friday. Findlay and most of the Division III track athletes will compete in some finals, but mostly preliminary events today and Saturday. Knights to host home-opener The Findlay Knights, which is billed as a semi-pro football team, will play its 2022 home opener against the Southern Michigan Predators at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Russ and Peg Sports Complex located at 1600 N. Blanchard Street. The Knights, coming off a 14-8 win over the Motor City Outlaws in their season opener, will play home-and-home matchups with the Outlaws (May 14/June 18), Predators (May 21/June 25), Marion Demons (May 28/July 2), Indiana Shockers (June 4/July 9) and the Indy Firehawks (June 11/July 16). Admission to Saturday's game is $7. Children 7 and under are admitted free.
