Making sure the cycle continues

Summer is on the horizon, and bicyclists are out and about on area roadways. For some, cycling is a hobby. But for others, bicycles are a primary mode of transpiration for their daily commutes and errands. National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Hancock County is looking to make sure the bikes used as a primary mode of transportation are in good shape and safe to use. "Instead of riding in an unsafe manner, I want to make sure they are riding safely," said Eric McKee, executive director of NAMI Hancock County. McKee was the co-owner of the now-closed Muddy River Bicycle Co. in downtown Findlay. He is donating his expertise in bike repair one Friday a month for the Only Means Bicycle Workshop. Sessions — the first of which was held this week — include services such as checking a bike's shifters, brakes, chain, tires, rims and frame. McKee will also work to make sure the bike fits its owner. McKee said he is not looking to take away work from local bike repair shops, but instead aims to offer repair and tune-up services to those who might not have the means to pay for them. The events are open to community members who use their bike as a primary mode of transportation, including students. Along with the tune-ups, NAMI has about 36 kids' helmets from the Ohio Department of Transportation to give out alongside bicycle tire checking kits donated by Cooper Tire. NAMI is also accepting donations of lightly used bike parts, as well as monetary donations. Checks should be marked with "Only Means" in the memo line.
