Shirley Sue Stevenson Wenner

Shirley Sue Stevenson Wenner, 92, peacefully passed away on Monday, June 6, 2022, at 3:30 p.m. She was in the care of family and Bridge Hospice at Fox Run Manor in Findlay, Ohio. Shirley was born Oct. 9, 1929, to Glenn and Ruby (Mertz) Stevenson. She wed her lifelong sweetheart Jack Edwin Wenner Sept. 6, 1948. Together they enjoyed 69 years of marriage. Jack preceded her in death Dec. 26, 2016. They happily raised three children. A son, Steven (Nancy) Wenner and two daughters, Earlene (Tom) Modd and Rosemary Price. Shirley was blessed with nine grandchildren, Andy (Latanya) Modd, Tony (Janie) Modd, Michael Modd, Jenn (tony) Brunetti, Lisa (John) Cooper, Jason (Amanda) Wenner, Michelle Meyer, Kirstin (Addison) Sherick, and Adam Price; and 13 great-grandchildren, Ashton and Brayden Cooper, Shelby, Mason, Kiley, Annie, Maren Modd, Jackson "JJ", Max, Tori, Hank Thomas Wenner, Skyler and Sophia Sherick. A brother, Donald (Carolyn) Stevenson preceded her in death. Shirley graduated from Findlay High School in 1947 and began a life of volunteerism and multiple careers. She had her own radio show called "Teen Tattler" and became lifeguard and manager of Findlay City Pool. As a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, served as "Martha" Circle leader and was a church board member. Her leadership skills served her well as she was President of the Woman's Society, Jayceetts, Ladies of the Elks Lodge, Zonta International, The Woman's National Farm and Garden Association, and KOA Owners Association. Shirley amazingly found time to be deeply involved in Cub Scouts, Blue Birds, Camp Fire and Girl Scouts. She also was listed as Community Leaders of America, Community Leaders of the World and Who's Who in America. In 1960, Shirley and Jack purchased Findlay Plumbing and Heating from her father and renamed it Jack's Heating, Air Conditioning and Plumbing Inc. They also owned and operated the KOA campground in Vanlue, Ohio for 15 years. Throughout her life, Shirley and Jack enjoyed countless trips traveling all 50 states of the U.S. as well as foreign destinations such as Russia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and her favorite, Antarctica. As well as Canada and Mexico. In later years, they became snowbirds at their winter home at Jamaica Bay in Fort Myers, Florida. There, too, Shirley became involved in many social events and the "Red-Hat" Society. Shirley loved to meet new people and made numerous lifelong friends. She and Jack were members of the 50 years dinner-dance group that met monthly. Shirley was compassionate, witty and smart. A perfect hostess, her home was always open to friends and family. She will be sadly missed, treasured always, but most importantly she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her favorite saying was "Think Happy Thoughts." The family would like to thank the staff of Fox Run Manor and Bridge Hospice, especially nurses Ginny and Misty, aide Sherry, and Chaplain Kathy Archer for their gentle care and guidance during the journey over the past eight months. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 10, 2022, at Coldren-Crates Funeral Home from 10-11 a.m. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday with burial to follow in Maple Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Bridge Home Health and Hospice in Shirley's name, or plant a "tree" in remembrance.
