6 local students attending Buckeye Boys State

Six Hancock County high school juniors are participating in Buckeye Boys State this week at Miami University of Ohio. Sessions conclude Saturday. The students are being sponsored by the Findlay American Legion, Ralph D. Cole Post 3. (Photos were provided for four of the six students.) Representing Findlay High School are Alexander Might, son of Tricia and James Might; and Andrew Behrendt, son of Elizabeth and Michael Behrendt. Students attending from Van Buren High School include Schae Deerwester, son of Kristin and Todd Deerwester; and Justin Schiefer, son of Jill and Chris Schiefer. Representing Liberty-Benton High School is Brandon Maag, son of Mary and Albert Maag. Eric Davis, son of Brenda and Luke Davis, is representing Cory-Rawson High School. Boys State is a mock state government intended to train young men who have completed their junior year of high school in the duties, rights and privileges of citizenship by providing them the opportunity to actively participate in government at the state, county and city levels. Participants are assigned to one of two political parties. The residence hall where they live during the week is their designated county, and the floor is their city. Students file petitions for candidacy for a variety of offices from governor to city council, and participate in the election process. After elections and inaugurations, they put the government into action.
