Keep pets calm this July Fourth

Fireworks can be a big boom for humans, but more of a bust for their animal friends. With the legalization of the use of fireworks on specific holidays on Ohio, the Humane Society and SPCA of Hancock County is offering some tips to handle animals while out at fireworks shows. Operations Manager Natalie Reffitt said the big thing is to keep pets inside. "Even outdoor dogs, outdoor cats, if they could be put in a garage or inside," she said. The humane society sees a lot of outdoor pets get spooked and run away because they do not have a place to go. Reffitt said the best thing to do for a pet's anxiety during fireworks is to leave on a noise device of some kind, like a television on a radio. She said the excess noise will reduce an animal's anxiety level should they hear a loud boom. The advice applies to both kenneled and non-kenneled pets. Animals in cages like rabbits or guinea pigs can still be frightened by sudden loud noises. While a pet sitter is useful, Refitt recommended pets stay in a place more familiar to them. If a pet sitter is used, make sure they are taking precautions to prevent an animal from running away, like earlier walks. If hosting a party, recommendations include keeping a pet in a secured room with a door that can be closed. "It may seem unfair to the pet and they will want to be with you, but each time the door opens during a party there is a chance the pet will run out unnoticed from the commotion and noises," Reffitt said. As a last precaution, Reffitt suggested fitting pets with collars with identifying information, saying to make sure cats specifically are fitted with breakaway collars for safety. She also recommends having a current photo of the pet. Lastly, if a pet does happen to get out, the owner can call the humane society at 419-423-1664, or call the Findlay Police Department and Hancock County Sheriff's Office to get in touch with Hancock County Animal Control. Reffitt also said social media is a great tool to help recover pets. When making a social media post, be sure to be as descriptive as possible about the pet and the circumstances of their disappearance, including things like time, date, breed, identifying details, a name and a recent photo.
