FHS tennis captures team title in Ashland

ASHLAND – Findlay High's girls tennis team won titles at third singles and first and second doubles on Saturday in opening its 2022 season by capturing the team championship of the Ashland Invitational. Senior Tabitha Cap finished first at No. 3 singles, blanking Ashland's Makala Spencer 8-0 in the finals. Senior Mia Kennard and junior Katy Rubiolo, playing No. 1 doubles after earning all-Three Rivers Athletic Conference honors as Findlay's No. 2 doubles team last season, also won their competition, beating Ashland's Chloe Ediger and Morgan Kaufman 8-7 (9-7) in the final. Findlay's No. 2 doubles team of seniors Lily Korecky and Carly Tong added a championship of their own in helping the Trojans take the team title. They defeated Ashland's Alex Swartzentruber and Haley Lefever 8-2. Ava Roach, TRAC runner-up at No. 3 singles a year ago and now playing No. 1, rallied from a first-match loss to Ashland's Audra McBride to place second. At. No. 2 singles, Caitlin England scored an 8-6 win over Ashland's Simone Haynes. Findlay compiled 12 points in winning the tournament for the second straight year. Norwalk was second (7-1/2), followed by Ashland (7-1/2), Shelby (5), Tiffin Columbian (4), Mansfield Madison (2) and New Philadelphia and Orrville (0). "We started a little nervous. We only five days since the season started and we were already in a tournament this weekend," said Emma Kristofferson, a five-year veteran of the program and former FHS player (Emma Miller) who this season replaced Sean Swisher as Findlay High's head coach. "We weren't sure if the girls were going to come out where we ended last year, or if they were going to be more intimidated. "Once they started playing together, they proved themselves, though. They did really, really well today. (14-sub head) FHS Golfers fifth COLUMBUS – Payson Dotson and Noah Miles carded matching 79s on Saturday in leading Findlay High's boys golf team to a fifth-place finish in the Steve Yomans' Classic held at the Champions' Golf Club in Columbus. Matt Pinksi shot an 82 and Nick Feighner an 86 to complete Findlay's 327 team total. Sam Swisher had a 91. (14-sub head) FHS Girls fourth TOLEDO -- Findlay High's girls golf team posted a 352 team total in finishing a close fourth in the Notre Dame Eagle Invitational held at the South Toledo Golf Club on Saturday. Casey Tate carded a team-leading 88 for Findlay. Ava Metz and Libby Holman both fired 91s and Lexi Leslie had a 107 as the Trojans finished one stroke out of third place and two out of second.
