Let's normalize conversations about suicide

Let's talk about suicide, a subject that is hard to talk about. The word itself can instill panic into others. Suicide is a scary word. The word's definition — intentionally ending one's own life — can cause fear. No one likes to think about death, let alone the idea of suicide. Just like any other mental or behavioral health need, suicide comes with its stigmas. These stigmas can include judgment, confusion, frustration and many more responses. Typical responses to suicide can include: "They are just doing it for attention," "How can anyone be so selfish," and "They were fine and happy when I spoke to them last week." Suicide is hard to navigate because we do not talk much about it. We unintentionally make speculations or assumptions about anyone who has suicidal thoughts or actions. We often ask, "well why didn't they just say something or go get help?" Because just like everyone else, someone with these thoughts is just as afraid to talk about them. Their fear of judgment, guilt or shame discourage them from speaking out about how they are feeling. That is where we all come in. We can work together to start "normalizing" conversations around the word suicide. St. Marks United Method Church has partnered with Family Resource Center, NAMI of Hancock County, and the ADAMHS Board to create a series called "Hope Lives Here." On Saturday, Sept. 10, from 4-5:30 p.m. at The Dock at St. Marks Church, 800 S. Main St., Findlay, members from the Family Resource Center Mobile Response Stabilization Team (MRSS) will be presenting on Suicide Prevention and Healing. During this time, you will learn about warning signs, safety planning, MRSS services and ways to beat the stigma of suicide. You will also hear the story of a family who walked through having their child present with suicidal ideation and what they did get through that tough time. The program is open to the public and there will be an opportunity for questions and a chance to share your stories as well. Information on community resources also will be available at the event.
