Bluffton boys, O-G girls give standout performances at Kalida

KALIDA – Bluffton runners finished 1-3 in the boys race and Ottawa-Glandorf runners were first and third in the girls competition at the Wildcat Cross Country Invitational held in Kalida on Saturday. In the girls meet, O-G's Alexa Fortman won the 5K race in 18:46.8 and Madelyn Hovest was third (19:07.5). Olivia Fenbert (13th, 20:20.5), Corinne Closson (23rd 20:34.2) and Rose Turnwald (28th, 20:54.3) completed O-G's total of 68 points. Liberty Center (80) edged Patrick Henry (82) for runner-up honors, while Liberty-Benton was fourth (142), Columbus Grove seventh (217), Van Buren ninth (243) and Bluffton 13th (345). Eighteen teams, along with individual runners from nine other schools, competed in the girls meet. Liberty-Benton's Madi Gaerke finished fifth overall in 19:14.0 to lead the Eagles. Riley Irwin was 26th overall (20:46.7), Hailey Hochstettler 32nd (21:02.4), Brenna Lay 35th (21:13.7) and Claire McDaniel 44th (21:39.5). Van Buren's Lily Grady had a top-ten finish, placing eighth in 19:45.7. Bluffton's June Essinger was 17th In the boys race, Bluffton's Landon Armstrong and Erik Nygaard place first (15:56.0) and third (16:03.4), respectively, but Columbus Grove's depth earned the Bulldogs the team title with 95 points. Lincolnview (98) and Ottawa-Glandorf (101) were also in the battle for first, with Bluffton fourth (120), Van Buren eighth (187), and Liberty-Benton 14th (383). In a large field that included eighteen teams, along with individual runners from seven other schools, Columbus Grove had three runners in the top 15 in Trent Koch (9th, 16.46.2), Luke Ellerbrock (12th, 16.49.9) and Bryce Bonifas (15th, 17.05.6). Evan Pitts was 23rd (17.26.8) and Logan Mershman 36th (18.03.3). Ottawa-Glandorf's Ty Rosengarten was fourth overall (16:24.5), Ty Buckland was 13th (16:59.3) and Coooper Fischer 18th (17:12.0). In addition to Armstrong and Nygaard Bluffton had a third top-ten placer in Sam Derstine (10th, 16:47.6). Hudson Sendelbach was again Van Buren's top runner, placing 17th overall in a time of 17:07.6. Led by Brayden (6th, 17:44.32) and Bryce (9th, 18:22.4) Young, Carey compiled 91 points in finishing behind Galion Northmor (40) and Colonel Crawford (77) in the boys team standings. Hopewell-Loudon got top-20 placings from Xander Roerdink (13th, 18:46.41) and Carson Elchert (19th, 19:09.6). Riverdale did not field a full team, but Ethan Warren was 14th overall with a time of 18:44.94. The placings of area schools was reversed in the girls meet where Hopewell-Loudon finished third and Carey fifth. Colonel Crawford ran away with the girls title, finishing with 23 points. Northmor had 72, Hopewell-Loudon 85 and Carey 132. H-L bunched its runners well, with Alivia Roerdink 14th (22:12.12), Hannah Schriener 15th (22:16.28) and Izabella Frankart 17th (22:41.26). Emily Arbogast (19th, 23:02.60) and Hanna Wyman (20th, 23:03.27) cracked the top-20 as well. Chloe Etzinger (13th, 21:34.83) and Abby Kurtz (16th, 22:22.84) led Carey and Riverdale's Allison Woodruff, running individually, ran a time of 19:34.27 and was the second runner across the finish line. Upper Sandusky's girl were tenth in the meet, with Hope Morris (20th, 21:37.7) and Brynlee Cundiff (27th, 22:22.0) leading the way. EDGERTON INVITE EDGERTON – Elmwood's boys cross team placed eighth and the girls were tenth in the Edgerton Invitational on Saturday. Jakob Zibbel finished 16th in the boys race with a time of 17:58.0. Jacob Reinhart was 29th (18:49.0). Leading Elmwood's girls were Danica Beasley (23rd, 23:13.0) and Abbie Allison (36th, 23:07.0). UF ATHLETICS MEN'S SOCCER Senior defender Bjoern Gilles converted two penalty kicks and had three goals overall to lead the University of Findlay men's soccer team to a 6-0 romp over Ohio Dominican in a Great Midwest Athletic matchup on Saturday. Mitchell Hanosh, Nick McCracken and Brendan Ash also scored goals and Christian Palushaj had two assists for the Oilers, 7-3-1 overall and a 5-2-1 in GMAC games. WOMEN'S SOCCER The University got off 14 totals, including six on goal, but could not connect on any of them in a 0-0 draw with Ohio Dominican in a Great Midwest Athletic matchup at deHaven Field on Saturday. Goalie Audrey Gibson-Zweifel made one save for the Oilers, 5-4-2 overall and 4-3-1 in GNMAC games.
