Warner scores twice as Trojans advance

FINDLAY 5 MADISON 1 Lewis Warner scored two goals and assisted on two others on Saturday in leading Findlay High's boys soccer team to a 5-1 win over Mansfield Madison in a Division I sectional final played at Elmer Graham Stadium. Owen Clevenger, Arda Dastan and Michael Kennard had the other goals for Findlay. Eli Pinion had an assist. The match was scoreless at the half, before Findlay broke things open. Goalie David Roberts made seven saves on eight shot attempts by Madison (11-6-1). Clevenger also led Findlay defensively with 15 intercepts and five steals. Jayden Barney had 10 steals, Dastan nine and Joe Gerardi seven. Aiden McCord had eight intercepts, with Dastan, Barney and Seth Franks all coming up with six. Findlay advances to Tuesday's district semifinal at Sylvania Southview where the Trojans (6-7-4) will face top-seeded and No. 9 ranked Anthony Wayne (14-2-3). The teams squared off in the first game of the season, with Anthony Wayne coming away with a 5-2 win. RIVERDALE 4 L-BENTON 3 Cam Altvater scored Riverdale's first goal of the game on Saturday. He also scored the last, and that was the one that made all the difference as the Falcons knocked off No. 4-seeded Liberty-Benton 4-3 in overtime in a Division III sectional final boys soccer match at Liberty-Benton. Altvater, on an assist from Mitch O'Flaherty, put Riverdale on the board eight minutes into the match. Liberty-Benton tied it two minutes later, then surged ahead with back-to-back goals in the 47th and 48th minutes of play. Riverdale got a break when Liberty-Benton scored an own-goal in the 64th minute. O'Flaherty then tied it with nine minutes left in regulation, before Altvater won it in the final minute of the first overtime. Landon Holland made two saves in goal for Riverdale, which avenged a 2-1 regular-season loss to L-B, improved to 7-9-2 overall, and earned a spot in Wednesday's district semifinal against Bluffton at Tiffin's Frost-Kalnow Stadium. Liberty-Benton had an 11-match unbeaten streak (8-0-3) snapped and ended its 2022 season at 11-4-3. CONTINENTAL 5 O-GLANDORF 0 CONTINENTAL – It took an Armey to take down Ottawa-Glandorf's soccer team, at least one anyway. Continental's Rhenn Armey scored three goals and assisted on another in leading the Pirates to a 5-0 win over O-G in a Division III boys soccer sectional final on Saturday. Armey scored twice in the first half when Continental forged a 3-0 lead. He added a goal – his 31st of the season – and an assist – his 14th – in the second half. Continental improved to 13-4-2 and advances to the district semifinals at Kalida on Wednesday. O-G ended its season at 8-8-1. BLUFFTON 4 EDISON 1 BLUFFTON – Edison broke a scoreless tie with a goal late in the first half. Bluffton then broke the game wide open. Nolan Hoffman opened the second half with two quick goals, Ben Harzler and Eden Antrim connected as well and second-seeded Bluffton thumped Edison 4-1 in a Division III sectional final at Steinmetz Field. Justin Good and Theo Andreas had assists for the Pirates. Bluffton limited Edison to two shots on goal and got one save from goalie Kyle Basil. Bluffton advances to the Division III district semifinals at Tiffin's Frost-Kalnow Stadium where the Pirates (9-6-2) will face Riverdale (12-3-3) Wednesday at 7 p.m. Cory-Rawson and Mansfield Christian will battle in Wednesday's first game, with the winners returning Saturday at 10 a.m. to decide the district champion and representative to the regional tournament. CORY-RAWSON 1 HURON 0 HURON – Cory-Rawson was winless in its last three boys soccer matches of the regular season. Once the OHSAA tournament started, the Hornets have been a different team. Carson Skulina blasted a shot off the Huron goalkeeper and into the net midway through the second half and goalie Tobey Wittenmeyer and Cory-Rawson's defense made it stand up as the Hornets, the No. 8 seed in the district tournament, knocked off No. 1-seeded Huron 1-0 in Saturday's sectional final. Hunter Foust started the game-winning play with midfield steal. Foust sent the ball ahead to Wilson Garmatter, who played it to Skulina. Skulina fired a shot from 20 yards out that Huron goalie Will Parcher got a hand on, but could not keep out of the net. Wittenemyer finished with 12 saves for Cory-Rawson, which will take a 6-7-5 record into Wednesday's district semifinal in Tiffin. The Hornets will face No. 3-seeded Mansfield Christian (12-5-1) in a 5 p.m. matchup. Mansfield Christian advanced with Saturday's 1-0 win over Van Buren. Huron ended its season at 12-4-2. UF SPORTS WOMEN'S SOCCER Ellie Tischler scored one goal, Payton Miller scored another and Hannah Rybicki assisted on both when the University of Findlay women's soccer team tied Ashland 2-2 on Saturday in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference match at the Armstrong Sports Complex. Audrey Gibson-Sweifel (3) and Kennedy Slovack (3) combined to make six saves for the Oilers, 9-4-3 overall and 8-3-2 in GMAC games. MEN'S SOCCER Nick McCracken scored with 10 minutes left in the match to give the University of Findlay men's soccer team a 2-1 win over Ashland in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference match on Saturday. Brendan Ash broke a scoreless tie and put UF on the board in 52nd minute of play. Ash also had the assist on McCracken's game winner as the Oilers improved to 9-7-1 overall and 7-6-1 in GMAC play. VOLLEYBALL CANTON – Journey Blevins had 20 kills, Alana Pohlman added 11 and Norah painter nine in leading the University of Findlay volleyball team to a 25-22, 25-14, 25-23 GMAC win over Malone. Emma White had 48 assists and Ava Doster had a team-high 22 digs for UF, 15-11 overall and 11-2 in the league. (14-sub head) Correction Jackson Temple scored on a 47-yard run on Friday in Vanlue's BVC football game with Van Buren. The touchdown was incorrectly attributed to JR Snook in Saturday's edition of the paper.
