UF women play tough against No. 2 Ashland, but fall

Findlay's women's basketball team got off to a very impressive start against Ashland. The finish wasn't quite as good, though. Hosting the No. 2-ranked team in Division II for their Great Midwest Athletic Conference opener, the Oilers converted 9 of 15 field goal attempts, and grabbed a 22-18 lead at the first stop. But the Eagles rallied, and finally broke away in the fourth quarter, using a 20-9 spurt to finish off a 73-61 win. Morgan Yoder drained five 3s for Ashland, and finished with a game-high 17 points. Hayley Smith added 15 points and eight boards as the Eagles improved to 7-0, 1-0 in the GMAC. Ashland led the Oilers 36-35 at the half, and were up 53-52 after three. Findlay stayed in the game thanks to some strong outside shooting from Rachel Cooke. She made 3 treys and finished with nine points, while Chloe Callahan led the Oilers with 16 points. But things got tough for UF in the final quarter. They shot 4 of 12 from the field, and committed eight turnovers. Findlay had 22 for the game. Ashland committed 13 miscues, but only had one in the final quarter. The Eagles also held an advantage at the line, converting 16 of 19 free throws, while Findlay made 8 of 10. Kate Ellis finished with 10 points and eight boards for Findlay, which fell to 3-3, 0-1 in the conference. The Oilers will be back in action Saturday, when they travel to take on G-MAC rival Malone in a 1 p.m. game. Ashland will host Tiffin Saturday. The Eagles got 19 points from Riley Irwin, 16 points and seven rebounds from Lauren Gerken and stormed past Van Buren, 59-20. Irwin connected on five 3-pointers, while Karis Willow – who had six points – had five blocks. Kylie Recker added eight points, five assists and three steals. The Panthers led 23-16 at the half, but outscored the Falcons 27-15 in the second half to win the BVC opener for both teams. Madison Schroeder scored 11 points for McComb, while Kacey Like recorded 10 points. For Riverdale, Mariah Bonham nearly had a double-double, notching 12 points – all on 3-pointers – and nine boards. ARCADIA 47 ARLINGTON 25 ARLINGTON -- Addy Coleman put up 15 points, and Emily Rank had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds as Arcadia rolled by Arlington, 47-25. CRESTVIEW 36 LEIPSIC -- Ava Henry recorded a team-high 12 points, and Leipsic pushed past Convoy Crestview Thursday, 44-36. The Vikings led 16-13 at the break, but pulled away for with a 16-8 run in the third quarter. Leah Kirkendall and Marisa Hermiller each recorded 10 points for Leipsic, which improved to 3-0, 1-0 in the Northwest Conference. Cali Gregory scored 11 points to lead Crestview. P-G 38 N. BALTIMORE 32 PANDORA – Pandora-Gilboa limited the North Baltimore offense to just 10 first-half points, and held a double-digit lead at halftime. The Tigers clawed back in the second half, but the Rockets held on for a 38-32 win. Savannah Knueven scored a team-high 10 points for P-G, while Maddie Rutschilling and Aliyah Wise each scored eight. The Wildcats star made 16 field goals and was 9 of 9 from the free throw line, finishing with 44 points in a 79-67 win over Bucyrus. Kloepfer also added eight rebounds in the win, which pushed Vanlue to 2-0. T.J. Rickle added 10 points, while Lanson Saltzman scored 11 to go with eight boards. Caldwell's teammate, tight ends Mike Rigerman, was named to the second team. Caldwell had interceptions for the Oilers this season, returning one for a touchdown. He also had a career-high 56 tackles. This is Caldwell's first all-region selection. By being named to the first team, he is now eligible for all-American status. Rigerman made his second straight appearance on the all-region list after being a first-team choice a year ago. In 2022, Rigerman secured 37 catches for 478 yards and three touchdowns.
