BASEBALL L-BENTON 6 VAN BUREN 0 Liberty-Benton opened defense of its Blanchard Valley Conference baseball title on Monday and the Eagles did so in impression fashion, riding another strong pitching performance from Kam Garlock to a 6-0 win over Van Buren. Garlock, a senior left-hander who had not allowed an earned run in an earlier start, went the distance on Monday, allowing two hits, no runs and striking out 11. L-B managed just eight total hits off Van Buren's Cohen Stevens and Elijah Mason, but took advantage of five walks, stole five bases and used timely hitting by Lincoln Garlock (1B, 2B, RBI), Mason Modd (2B, 2 RBI), Zach Elchert (1B, RBI) and Conner Hiss (3B, RBI) to improve to 5-0. We had to small-ball it all night," Riverdale coach Drew Bostic said after Gauge King's two-run single in the fifth inning tied the game 2-2 and the Falcons, BVC runner-up the past two seasons, scored the go-ahead run in the ninth without getting the ball out of the infield. A senior right-hander, Jones allowed one run on seven hits and struck out 10 in a complete game effort. He also went 4-for-5 at the plate with a triple and three singles.
