6 Courier editorial staff win AP awards

Six editorial staff at The Courier won best journalism awards in the 2022 Ohio Associated Press Media Editors annual newspaper competition. The Ohio Associated Press announced finalists Monday. While finalists know an award was won, first-, second- and third-place winners won't be announced until the annual luncheon in Columbus on May 7. The Courier's finalists for 2022 are Zach Baker, for Best Columnist; Leah Alsept, for Best Feature Photo; Denise Grant, for Best Investigative Reporting; Dave Hanneman, for Best Sports Writer; and Angela LaRosa, for Best Public Service. Courier News Editor Mike Magnuson is a finalist for Best Enterprise Reporting for his 2022 work with the Norwalk Reflector. LaRosa is also a finalist in two categories for her 2022 work with the Sandusky Register, for Best Public Service and Best Investigative Reporting. There are five divisions in the state organized by circulation. In the fourth division, The Courier competes with six other Ohio newspapers, including The Canton Repository, The (Elyria) Chronicle-Telegram, The Lima News, the Warren Tribune Chronicle, the Willoughby News Herald and The (Youngstown) Vindicator. The contest is judged by out-of-state newspaper editors and covers page designs, online presence, reporting and general excellence.
