Crucial errors hurt FHS baseball against St. Francis

ST. FRANCIS 5 FINDLAY 4 TOLEDO – For the third time in four games, minor miscues cost Findlay High's baseball team in a Three Rivers Athletic Conference matchup. Two third-inning throwing errors did the damage on Friday when Toledo St. Francis scored three unearned runs and beat the Trojans 5-4. Four errors cost Findlay in a 4-1 loss to Toledo St. John's on Tuesday, and three errors factored in a 9-8 loss to Whitmer on Wednesday. Findlay took a 3-0 lead on St. Francis before the Knights (3-1 TRAC) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Trojans regained a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth, but St. Francis answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ben Best (1-2) limited St. Francis to four hits, and produced at the plate, smacking two singles, driving in one run and scoring one as well. Javonte Hill had a single, a double and an RBI, with Austin Sertell and Will Cordonnier adding RBI doubles. Findlay totaled six hits off St. Francis ace Josiah Erd, but dropped to 2-4 in the TRAC and 4-8 overall with the loss. The Trojans hosts Lima Senior on Monday and Fremont on Wednesday, then travel to Oregon Clay on Friday in their next series of TRAC games. The Eagles picked up their 12th win of the year, behind senior leadoff hitter Lincoln Garlock. Garlock finished with a triple, two singles, and three RBIs. His brother, Kam Garlock, finished with three singles and an RBI. Mason Modd hit a two-RBI triple as well. Tommy Offenbacher notched a triple, a single, and four RBIs for the Vikings. The Redskins improved to 3-13 with this win, led by junior Jacob Preble, who had a two-RBI single. Both Adam Emerich and Preston Snoke had two hits for Arcadia. URSULA 5 TOLEDO – Findlay High's softball team took a 6-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning, freshman ace Natalie Steffes was able to nail it down from there on and the Trojans chalked up one of their biggest wins of the season on a wet and windy Friday when they knocked off league-leading Toledo St. Ursula 6-5 in a Three Rivers Athletic Conference game. Steffes allowed five runs on eight hits and struck out eight. Offensively, she helped her own cause with a solo home run. Lola Spieles had three hits and drove in two runs as Findlay improved to 9-5 overall and 6-2 in the TRAC. St. Ursula, which suffered its first loss to No. 3-ranked Springfield on Thursday, was handed its first TRAC loss and is 9-2 overall, 2-1 in the league. Addie Sprang (2-1B, RBI) and Alaina Steffes (1B, 2B) collected two hits each off St. Ursula ace Jenna Lutz. Laney Oliver and Bailey Ashcroft had RBI singles for the Trojans, who tied the game 2-2 in the fifth before breaking loose for four runs in the sixth. St. Ursula pulled within a run in the bottom of the seventh before Steffes and the Trojans closed it out. Lutz and Brooke Bowers had two hits and Haley Glass a two-run double for St. Ursula.
