The Courier takes home AP awards

COLUMBUS — The Courier brought home the hardware at the 2022 Ohio Associated Press Media Editor Awards in Columbus Sunday. Five staff members from The Courier's editorial team were honored in the fourth division of the organization's newspaper awards. Courier reporters and editors Denise Grant, Zach Baker, Dave Hanneman, Leah Alsept, Angela LaRosa and Mike Magnuson competed with articles published during 2022. Grant placed third for investigative reporting, Baker placed second as best columnist, Hanneman placed second as best sports writer, Alsept placed first for best feature photo and LaRosa placed third in public service. LaRosa also placed first for best public service and third for investigative reporting in the third division for articles published in the Sandusky Register. NewMagnuson placed third in the first division for enterprise reporting for an article published in the Norwalk Reflector. Nominations came from submissions representing the best in journalism and were judged by out-of-state editors. AP awards are separated into divisions by their distribution levels; up to 7,999 daily, 8,000-11,999, 12,000-18,999, 19,000-59,999 and over 60,000 daily. The Courier competes in the fourth division, along with The Canton Repository, The Elyria Chronicle-Telegram, The Lima News, the Warren Tribune Chronicle, the Willoughby News Herald and The Youngstown Vindicator. An awards banquet on Sunday was hosted at Villa Milano, 1630 Schrock Rd., during which journalists across the state were honored for their achievements in 2022.
