BLUFFTON - The Swiss Community Historical Society has resumed its scheduled tours now through fall. The Swiss Homestead, sometimes called the Schumacher House, offers a glimpse into the lives of Swiss immigrants in portions of Allen and Putnam counties known as the Settlement during the mid-19th century. Visitors may tour the house, summer kitchen, workshop and barn with original and period items, as well as the garden. Plans are underway this summer to begin reconstruction of the Basinger barn as the new heritage center. Visitors may view the progress of the project from a safe distance. Susie Gratz, interpretation committee chair and board member, said the society hosted many individuals, families and reunion groups in 2022, along with Bluffton first-graders and some Ohio Northern University students. In addition to scheduled tours, the society plans to have a series of events, now called Summer Saturdays, from 1-4 p.m. June 3, July 1 and Aug. 5. On those days, visitors may participate in a hands-on activity such as writing with nib pens, sampling hearth cooking, and investigating the garden's vegetables and herbs.
