Mich. men indicted for weekend pursuit that ended in Hancock County

Two men have been indicted on felony assault charges after a vehicle pursuit stemming from a Michigan carjacking and homicide over the weekend. Around 3:40 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, police in Monroe, Michigan responded to shots fired and upon arrival discovered two victims had been injured, 31-year-old Michael Beck Jr., who died at the scene, and a 34-year-old man whose identity has not yet been released. The suspects — later identified as Ronnie L. Oliver, 44, of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Stephen Jones Jr., 29, of Monroe, Mich. — fled the scene in a blue Ford 150 located about four hours later by Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers at a rest area near Bowling Green. Troopers initiated a stop, but the vehicle led troopers on a pursuit southbound on I-75 into Hancock County, according to a release from the State Patrol. During the pursuit, the suspects shot at the pursuing officers multiple times. The vehicle eventually went off the right side of Township Road 240 in Hancock County and struck a ditch. Oliver, the passenger, was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for precautionary reasons, according the the Patrol's release. Jones also was taken into custody and flown to a hospital with serious injuries. No officers were physically injured and both men were indicted in the Hancock County Court of Common Pleas Tuesday. Oliver, who has since been booked at the county jail with a $150,000 bond, faces one first-degree felony charge of felonious assault. Jones remains in custody at the hospital, but was indicted with a felonious assault charge, a first-degree felony, and failing to comply with orders, a third-degree felony. If convicted, felonious assault charges carry a sentence of up to 11 years and fines up to $20,000. The failing to comply charge could land Jones a mandatory license suspension of six months to three years.
