Modd-erating force: L-B standout stars again as Eagles trounce PC

Mason Modd did it again. As Liberty-Benton defeated Port Clinton 50-14, no Eagle had a greater impact than L-B's senior quarterback. Modd threw for 247 yards, completing 17 of his 23 pass attempts and nailing four touchdowns. Modd also had 53 rushing yards, good for two more scores on the ground. Seth Elchert ended the night with 133 receiving yards and two touchdown grabs, including a 65-yard connection with Modd for L-B's first touchdown of the evening. The Falcons jumped out to a 20-0 lead after the first quarter, and were up to 42 points in the second. A late second-quarter touchdown and one in the third was not enough to swing the momentum in the Wildcats' favor. Falcons senior quarterback Heath Dunbar continued his impressive string of performances. Dunbar completed 12 of his 23 pass attempts, for 169 yards. Dunbar also completed four touchdown passes to bring his total for the season to 15. His top target was Davin Harbor, who got things done both catching the ball and carrying it. Harbor had seven receptions for 68 yards, along with six rushes for 100 yards. Vanlue's Jaxon Temple finished with 103 rushing yards on eight carries, an average of nearly 13 yards per carry. The Falcons moved to 3-1, and will host 1-3 Van Buren next Friday in a BVC matchup. The Wildcats now sit at 1-2. CAREY 34 WYNFORD 0 CAREY– Carey opened the floodgates in the second quarter, in a 34-0 flattening of Wynford on Friday. The Blue Devils put three touchdowns on the board during the second, two coming at the hands of seniors Carter Smiley and Austin Niederkohr. Smiley ran in a four-yard touchdown early in the second, as well as throwing a 34-yard pass to Niederkohr to wrap up the first half. In between Smiley's two scores was a 10-yard touchdown run from Niederkohr. Sophomore Eli Steen finished with 114 rushing yards and notched two touchdowns as well, with runs coming in the first and third quarters. The Blue Devils have evened up their record at 2-2 following a rocky start to the 2023 season, losing their first two matchups. Carey will travel to Buckeye Central next Friday in an N10 matchup. McComb scored a whopping seven first-half touchdowns, including four in the first quarter, to squash BVC rival Van Buren 63-7 and remain undefeated. Althauser finished the evening with 228 rushing yards and four touchdowns on just nine carries, an average of 25 yards a carry. Quarterback Blake Wittenmyer was 8-of-14 on pass attempts for 116 yards, and also had 42 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Mason Thorla-Lopez caught a 63-yarder from Parker Beilharz in the first quarter for the Black Knights' lone score. Beilharz tallied 96 passing yards in the loss. The Black Knights fall to 1-3 ahead of a matchup with the red-hot Riverdale Falcons next Friday. On the other side, McComb will put their streak on the line against Pandora-Gilboa at home. NORTHERN 19 DOLA– A late push from Waynesfield-Goshen saw it escape Dola with a victory, defeating Hardin Northern 28-19 in NWCC play. The Polar Bears had a 12-7 lead going into the break, and extended it to 19-7 early in the third quarter. Then, the Tigers took control. Waynesfield-Goshen drove in two touchdowns to answer in the third quarter, and then another in the fourth to seal the win. Polar Bears quarterback Nolan Hopson threw for 126 yards, and rushed for 73 in the loss. Carter Curtis had 17 carries for 116 yards, while also notching a single reception for 47 yards. Xander Wilson had nine receptions for 92 yards. Hardin Northern will travel to Lima Perry next Friday, to take on the Commodores. GROVE 40 SPENCERVILLE 0 COLUMBUS GROVE– Columbus Grove had a pair of 20-point quarters to trample Spencerville, 40-0. The Bulldogs scored 20 points in each of the first and second quarters, and carried their 40-0 halftime lead to a shutout. Trenton Barraza led the Bulldogs with 51 rushing yards and a touchdown. His most impressive play, however, was on special teams. Barraza drove a Spencerville punt all the way home, 65 yards for a touchdown with seconds remaining in the first quarter. Quarterback Landon Best went 9-of-12 on passes, throwing for 91 yards and connecting on three touchdowns. Columbus Grove now sits at 2-2, and will play Delphos Jefferson on the road next Friday. EAST 0 LEIPSIC– Leipsic dominated Allen East on Friday, winning 21-0. The Vikings' defense was in full force on Friday, allowing just 123 total yards. Two early turnovers had the Vikings in rough waters, but they were able to right the ship with just under five minutes to go in the first half. Quarterback Quin Schroeder ran in a score to get things going, and the win followed. Leipsic, now 5-0, will look to remain unbeaten next Friday, as it travels to Ada. CON. CRESTVIEW 47 ADA 9 CONVOY – Crestview scored five touchdowns in the first half, led 35-3 at the break, and coasted to a 35-3 win over Ada Friday. The Knights used a powerful running game to dominate the Bulldogs – they had 323 yards of rushing – and its defense kept Ada in check. The Bulldogs' lone points came on a 30-yard field goal from Logan Jolliff in the first quarter and a 15-yard touchdown by Jallee Bolden in the third. Bolden finished with 90 yards on 17 carries. Ada fell to 2-2. It will host unbeaten Leipsic next week. GENOA 55 FOSTORIA 14 GENOA — Aidan Antry ran for three touchdowns and caught a trio of TD passes Friday — all in the first half — to fuel Genoa's 55-14 Northern Buckeye Conference win against Fostoria. Antry scored on a 4-yard run and passes of 35 and 15 yards in the first quarter, and runs of 45 and 22 yards and a pass of 48 yards in the second to help the Comets (4-1, 1-0 NBC) enter halftime up 48-8. He finished with 100 yards rushing on just six carries, while grabbing five passes for 126 yards. Aiden Brunkhorst threw the touchdown passes, ending 14 of 18 through the air for 197 yards. Ethan Crawford added a 37-yard fumble return for a touchdown to open the scoring in the first quarter for the Comets, and Alex Materni scored on a 15-yard run in the fourth. Gavin Miller had touchdown passes of 6 and 7 yards to Brayden Harrison for the Redmen (1-3, 0-1). Machi Johnson topped Fostoria's effort with 101 yards rushing. Harrison ran for 62 yards and Trenten Smith added 51. SEN. EAST 46 U. SANDUSKY 44 UPPER SANDUSKY — Both quarterbacks put a on a run-and-gun clinic Friday, with each figuring in six touchdowns. But Seneca East's defense stiffened when it had to as the Tigers turned back Upper Sandusky 46-44 in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference opener. Blake Foos ended up throwing for four touchdowns and running for two more to key Seneca East, but three of those TDs came after Upper Sandusky's Kaden Vogel returned an interception 50 yards to put the Rams up 38-26 with 4:19 to go in the third quarter. Foos responded with a 24-yard scoring run less than 90 seconds later to make it 38-32, then bulled in from the 3 just eight seconds into the fourth quarter. His ensuing conversion pass to Will Bischoff put the Tigers up 40-38. Upper Sandusky countered with Kaden Holman's 29-yard scoring toss to Kaleb Francis midway through the fourth quarter for a 44-40 advantage. The Tigers answered that with a 16-yard Foos strike to Nicholas Parks to go up 46-44 at the 3:17 mark. Seneca East's defense held from there to preserve the win. It was the end to a back-and-forth affair. Jackson Gayheart's 1-yard plunge and Luke Hicks' PAT boot for Seneca East at the 6:40 mark of the first quarter, but the Rams led 8-6 after Holman found Francis from 26 yards out and the two connected on the conversion pass just 40 seconds later. The second quarter saw Holman hit Francis with a 66-yard TD toss and bull in from 3 yards out, while Foos had TD tosses of 54 yards to Laine Dixon and 11 yards to Taylor Young, sending the teams into halftime knotted at 20. In the third quarter Holman sandwiched touchdown runs for 37 and 3 yards for the Rams around Foos' 58-yard TD pass to Hicks before Vogel's pick-6 seemingly gave Upper Sandusky the momentum. H-LOUDON 26 GIBSONBURG 7 GIBSONBURG — Evan Kreais threw a pair of touchdown passes and Braylon Martinez ran for two more scores Friday as Hopewell-Loudon dropped Gibsonburg 26-7 in the Sandusky Bay Conference River Division opener. Evan Kreais had TD tosses of 7 yards to Blake Berrier in the first quarter and 63 yards to Adam Kreais in the third. Martinez bulled in from the 3 in the second quarter and the 1 in the third for the Chieftains (4-0, 1-0 SBC). The Golden Bears (1-3, 0-1) avoided the shutout on Grant Smith's 45-yard run in the third period.
