Seed pod collection open

The Ohio Pollinator Habitat Imitative is seeking public involvement to collect and drop off milkweed seed pods at various locations in Ohio through Nov. 12. The Hancock Soil & Water Conservation District will be collection station in Hancock County with the collection bin beside the door to the district's office inside the Agricultural Center. The drop off can be completed without going into the office. A press release from the district seed pods should be collected when the pods are dray and gray or brown in color. A good test is to see if the center seam pops when gentle pressure is applied. Plastic bags should be avoided in favor of paper bags due to moisture collection and mold concerns. Prior to drop off, seed pods should be stored in a cool and dry area. The district recommends the use of disposable gloves when harvesting or handling the pods.
