Frontline workers make us all stronger

Imagine going to work each day not knowing what you might encounter. That would be your challenge if you were a first responder or frontline worker. Perhaps you will save a life, protect a citizen from being harmed, put out a fire, or arrive first on the scene of a horrific traffic crash. Or maybe you'd respond to a call from someone having thoughts of suicide, or happen upon an overdose. First responders and frontline workers labor in anonymity and their efforts generally fly under the radar. But they still deserve the public's respect and gratitude every hour of every day. Many Ohio communities, including Hancock County, will be holding appreciation events and activities this week in tribute to first responders and frontline workers who are, among their other duties, continuing to fight the opioid epidemic and helping those in recovery for substance use or mental health. As our community continues to face challenges of the aftereffects of COVID-19, crime, drug use and mental illness, we join others in thanking all our police officers, firefighters, EMTs, dispatchers and social workers and others on the frontlines for the important work they do. Their selflessness and dedication should never be taken for granted. They spend their days and nights sorting out incidents, accidents and societal problems, usually outside the public view and more times than not without recognition. They also help guide others to treatment and recovery resources, supporting children and families impacted by substance use and mental illness and promoting prevention in the process. Their efforts, in turn, help make Hancock County a stronger, safer, healthier place to live, work and play. We admire their commitment to serving all members of our community and thank them for their valiant work and collaborative efforts with local agencies. They make us all better by what they do.
