Man indicted in Arlington bus accident

BOWLING GREEN — On Wednesday, a Wood County grand jury indicted a man for allegedly crashing into an Arlington school bus earlier this month, which could land him 66 years in prison if he is convicted. Aaron Hilt, 32, of North Baltimore, is facing 13 counts of aggravated vehicular assault, all third-degree felonies, after allegedly sending students and faculty on the bus to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. He also was indicted on a fifth-degree felony for vandalism and two counts of operating a vehicle under the influence, both misdemeanors. About 9:15 p.m. on Sept. 7, Hilt allegedly drove a Dodge Ram pick-up truck into an Arlington Local Schools bus southbound on I-75 near the Eagleville Road exit, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The bus was returning from a junior high football game against Elmwood and was filled with 39 students and staff. Hilt careened off the interstate, through a fence and stopped at the side of the road. The truck also caught fire and Hilt was allegedly under the influence, but refused to take a test, according to the State Patrol. The indictment said bus driver Miles E. VonStein, 34, of Jenera, was able to perform a controlled stop. If convicted, each aggravated vehicular assault charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and the felony vandalism charge carries a maximum one year in prison. Hilt has a $50,000 bond and is incarcerated at the Wood County jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 2.
