Trojans sweep Whitmer in NLL volleyball

FINDLAY &emsp;&emsp;3 WHITMER &emsp;&emsp;0 TOLEDO – Ava Buddelmeyer hammered 15 kills and Olivia Smith had nine in leading Findlay to a straight set 27-25, 25-16, 25-21 win over Toledo Whitmer in Wednesday's Northern Lakes League volleyball match. Buddelmeyer also had 10 assists and seven digs for the Trojans, who have won four of their last six games to improve to 11-7 overall, 5-6 in the league. Erin Caton had 21 assists, 13 digs and three aces against Whitmer. Molly Crates (5 assists) had a team-high 29 digs for the Trojans, who now head into a three-game home stretch where they will face Toledo Bowsher on Monday, Sylvania Northview on Tuesday and Napoleon on Thursday when the FHS freshmen, junior varsity and varsity teams will stage a Volley for the Cure event aimed at raising awareness for the early detection of breast cancer. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. that day and anyone wearing a Volley for the Cure t-shirt will be admitted free. JUNIOR VARSITY: Toledo Whitmer, 2-0 FRESHMEN: Findlay, 2-1 VAN BUREN 3 VANLUE &emsp;&emsp;0 VANLUE – Selma Brant pounded 19 kills, Brylee Ponn had eight and Brooklyn Wilkin had seven kills and four blocks as Van Buren continued its torrid tear with a straight set 25-10, 25-21, 25-20 win over Vanlue in a Blanchard Valley Conference volleyball match. Ashlee Deitrick added six kills for Van Buren, which has won three straight matches and eight of its last nine in climbing to 12-5 overall, 3-2 in the BVC. Brooke Ingwersen led the Black Knights with 31 assists. Ava Cramer had a team-high 17 digs, Abbie Bowen had 11 and Brant 10. JUNIOR VARSITY: Van Buren, 2-0. MCCOMB &emsp;&emsp;3 ARCADIA &emsp;&emsp;0 ARCADIA – McComb's Kacey Like was 26-for-30 spiking with 15 kills, 15-for-18 serving with three aces and added eight digs in the Panthers' 25-13, 25-12, 25-21 BVC volleyball win over Arcadia. Miranda Wells (19-20 spiking) had 10 kills, Hannah Sherick (12-13 spiking, 4 digs) had seven and Morgan Kern (14-19 spiking, 5 digs) and Mackenzie Schroeder (12-13 spiking) had five kills each. Kelsey Jenkins led the Panthers (12-4, 4-2 BVC) with 17 digs. Grace Hassan (7 digs) was 45-for-45 setting with 21 assists and Shelby Hassan (5 digs) was 22-for-23 setting with 12 assists. Kateland Keefe had five kills and 12 digs for Arcadia (2-15, 0-6 BVC). Jade Johnson had three kills and Olivia Yoakam (7 digs) and Ellie Moes (3 aces) had two kills each. ARLINGTON 3 RIVERDALE 0 ARLINGTON – Mea Alexander was 16-for-17 serving with three aces and had 14 assists in Arlington's 25-22, 25-17, 25-21 BVC volleyball win over Riverdale. Gabby Schutz led Arlington (9-8, 2-3 BVC) with 10 kills and Alexander had five. Ellie Marquart and Addisyn Molina both had 12 digs, with Marquart handing out 20 assists and serving three aces as well. Addie Farmer had 75 sets and nine assists for Riverdale. Katie Boucher and Carly Harcher both had four kills with Haidyn Thacker and Shayla Newfer adding three each. Newfer led the Falcons with 28 digs; Boucher and Karcher both had 23. P-GILBOA &emsp;&emsp;3 ELMWOOD &emsp;&emsp;1 BLOOMDALE – Corrin Luginbill blasted 29 kills, Devin Draper had eight and Navaeha Alvarado added six as Pandora-Gilboa rebounded from Monday's BVC loss to Arlington with a 25-22, 25-14, 22-25, 25-14 win over Elmwood. Peyton Diller set up the front line with 50 assists. Ava Huffman led P-G with 36 digs, Luci Hovest had 19 and Diller 14. Now 7-10 overall, P-G improved to 5-1 in the BVC heading into Monday's league showdown at Liberty-Benton (15-2, 5-0 BVC). JUNIOR VARSITY: Elmwood, 2-0 LEIPSIC &emsp;&emsp;3 OTTOVILLE &emsp;&emsp;0 OTTOVILLE – Alivia Jones had 14 kills and six blocks and Danaysia Danzy had 13 kills and 12 digs in Leipsic's 25-12, 25-23, 25-12 Putnam County League volleyball win over Ottoville. Karmyn Brough was 59-for-59 setting with 32 assists, Jaelynn Siefer was 16-for-16 serving with two aces and Samantha Hazelton had 15 digs for the No. 9-ranked (D-IV) Vikings, 13-2 overall and 4-0 in PCL matches. GIRLS SOCCER FINDLAY &emsp;&emsp;4 WHITMER &emsp;&emsp;0 Leah Couch and Kamryn Gearig scored two goals each and Findlay keepers Vida Mendoza (2 saves) and Zoe McCormick combined on the shutout when Findlay High's girls soccer team blanked Toledo Whitmer 4-0 in Wednesday's Northern Lakes League contest at Elmer Graham Stadium. Erin Meier assisted on Couch's goal 16 minutes into the match and Gearig converted a free kick just before the half. Couch scored her second goal on a Molly Ferguson assist 12 minutes into the second half. Annabelle Cooper had the assist on Gearig's second goal in the final minute. Findlay, 5-7-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the league, peppered Whitmer (2-11-0) with 38 shots, 18 of them on goal. Defensively, Olivia Gayhart (10 intercepts) and Gabby Ritzler (4 intercepts, 2 steals) led the Trojans with 15 recoveries each. Ferguson (4 intercepts) had 12 recoveries and Abby DiBerardino (7 intercepts) had nine. JUNIOR VARSITY: Findlay 1, Whitmer 1 ADA &emsp;&emsp;6 CORY-RAWSON &emsp;&emsp;0 ADA – Ada's Ella Marshall scored three goals in Wednesday's 6-0 win over Cory-Rawson and in the process etched her name deeper in the record books. Marshall's three goals gave her a single-season record of 18, and increased her career record for goals to 47. Olivia Burkhart added two goals and Lexi Poling had one. Elsie Allen had two assists and goalie Katie Sizemore earned a school-record third shutout for the Bulldogs (6-4-2).
