Stechschulte places third at NLL

NLL CHAMPIONSHIPS The individual champions got to celebrate team championships as well on Saturday when the 2023 Northern Lakes League Buckeye and Cardinal Division cross country meets were held in Bowling Green. Anthony Wayne's Connor Long covered the 3.1-mile course in a time of 15:53.82 to not only win the boys individual title but lead the Generals to the team title as well. Anthony Wayne also had top ten placings from Ryan Shelton (6th, 16:44.67) and Jacob Proctor (7th 16:47.01) in topping the field with 37 points. Perrysburg was second in the Buckeye Division with 43 points, followed by Sylvania Northview (61), Findlay (99) and Toledo Whitmer (139), Individually, Findlay got an outstanding race from junior Adrian Stechchulte, who placed third overall with a time of 16:36.07. Perrysburg, Ohio's Division I state champion in 2021 and fourth at state last season with a young lineup, dominated the girls meet. 0 Led by individual race champion Hannah Kersten (18:53.85), Perrysburg had four runners among the top six placers and won a sixth straight NLL title with 25 points. Anthony Wayne (69) edged Sylvania Northview (73) for second, Findlay was fourth (85) and Toledo Whitmer fifth (107). Natalie Gutman, a sophomore, led Findlay. Gutman posted a time of 20:19.73 and was seventh overall, earning, along with Stechschulte, first-team all-NLL honors, BVC MEET MCCOMB – Liberty-Benton had the top two runners in the boys race and two of the top three in the girls meet in sweeping both titles at the 2023 Blanchard Valley Conference cross country championships held at McComb on Saturday. BVC Boys Runner of the Year Jackson Hochstettler was first with a time of 16:19.27 and Cohen Levenhagen was second in 16:23.50 as L-B easily won the boys title with 24 points. Van Buren was second (52) and Elmwood third (70), with Riverdale (95) and Pandora-Gilboa (107) also fielding full teams. Riverdale's Allison Woodruff was the girls BVC Runner of the Year after winning her race with a time of 18:55.12. L-B's Madi Gaerke was second (19:48.25) and Brenna Lay third (19:57.44) in helping the Eagles (39 points) edge Van Buren (56), Riverdale (61) and Elmwood (73) in the team standings. Pandora-Gilboa was fifth (130). In the boys meet, Gabe St. Amour was fourth (16:40.80), Aiden Lee eighth (17:17.76) and Lane Fannin ninth (17:24.97) as L-B had three of the top four runners in the field and five of the top ten. Van Buren's Carter Fry (17:05.88), Carter Finley (17:05.88) and Reed Harmon (17:13.41) placed fifth, sixth and seventh in the overall standings. Elmwood's Jacob Zibbel broke up Liberty-Benton's attempt to sweep the top four places, finishing third with a time of 16:36.57. Riverdale's Andrew Woodruff was tenth overall (17:35.64) in leading the Falcons. Emma Garmatter's eighth-place time of 21:10.16 gave Liberty-Benton three runners in the top ten in the girls race. Emma Spears (12th, 21:36.44) and Alexis May (14th, 21:48.85) completed the Eagles' scoring. Van Buren's Lily Grady was fourth (20:07.55), Olivia Coutinho was seventh (20:40.08) and Kate Schroeder tenth (21:26.80). Annalease Woodruff (5th, 20:32.02) added a top-five placing for Riverdale, Elmwood's Alayna Beasley was sixth (20:37.42) in the overall standings, and Pandora-Gilboa's Savannah Knueven was ninth (21:12.23). Riverdale's Maryann Holderman (girls) and Van Buren's Dan Hartsel (boys) were named the 2023 BVC coaches of the year. Cross country runners will now set their sights on the journey to the OHSAA state meet to be held Nov. 4 at the Fortress Obetz and Memorial Park in Obetz. The first step for many area schools will be Saturday's Division I, II and III district meet at Findlay's Owens Community College. Seneca East had the top two runners in the boys meet, scored 28 points and easily outdistanced Bucyrus (72) for that title. Colonel Crawford (44) edged Seneca East (51) in the girls standings, with Upper Sandusky (54) a close third. Carey's girls placed fourth, while the Carey boys were sixth. Upper Sandusky had three girls crack the top ten, with Hope Morris placing fifth (20:40.19), Abigail Ault sixth (20:47.44) and Brynlee Cundiff ninth (21:15.02). Carey's Chloe Etzinger ran a time of 19:51.57 and was third in the overall standings. In the boys race, Upper Sandusky's Evan Hinesman (6th, 17:24.70) and Carey's Brayden Young (8th, 17:44.63) were top-ten placers. MARYS – Ottawa-Glandorf's Madelyn Hovest and Anna Buddelmeyer finished 1-2, two other O-G runners cracked the top ten and the Titans rolled to the Western Buckeye League girls cross country championship on Saturday. Hovest won the girls race in 19:21.82, Buddelmeyer was a close second in 19:31.02, Corinne Closson was fifth (19:59.14) and Liana Fortman ninth (20:34.02). The Titans had three other runners in the top 15, but needed only Rose Turnwald's 12th place effort (21:24.65) to finish with 29 points and easily out distance the field. The race for the WBL boys title was exactly that, a race, and a close one at that. Lima Shawnee ended up winning the meet with 76 points, with Celina (81), Van Wert (88) and O-G (97) and Defiance (97) in the thick of things as well. Ty Rosengarten led O-G, finishing second in the boys race in (16:04.59). Cooper Fischer was 18th for O-G (17:33.76), Brandon Frey 23rd (17:58.64), Jordan Croy 25th (18:06.75) and Conner Johnson 29th (18:21.50) NORTHWEST CENTRAL CONFEFRENCE NORTH BALTIMORE – Cory-Rawson may be new to the Northwest Central Conference but the Hornets already have some NWCC hardware to put in the trophy case after winning the league cross country meet on Saturday. Cory-Rawson used good overall depth to chalk up 54 points and edge Hardin Northern (66) for the boys title. North Baltimore (137) was seventh in the standings. Only two schools fielded full teams in the girls meet, with Waynesfield-Goshen taking that title, 15 to 50, over Hardin Northern. Grant Welte was second (18:18) and Hunter Foust seventh (19:08) in leading Cory-Rawson to the boys title. Keegan Sammet (19:52) and Nate Gregorowicz (1:57) were 11th and 12th respectively, and Carson Skulina was 22nd (21:23). Ridgedale's Brogan Weston was the overall race winner with a time of 17:19, with Hardin Northern's Andrew Sutton just behind him in 17:55. HN's Riley Newton was fifth (19:04), and North Baltimore's Daniel Hinkle was 19th (20:47). Waynesfield-Goshen runners filled seven of the top eighth spots in the girls race. The lone exception was North Baltimore's Attlee Rowlinson, who was sixth with a time of 25:25. Lindsay Crouse was 12th overall (28:13), while Abbie Diller (11th, 28:06) and Paeghton Cook (14th, 28:27) were Hardin Northern's top placers. In the boys competition, Luke Ellerbrock hit the tape first in 16:05.2 and teammate Evan Pitts was second in 16:20.8. Levi Bryan (6th, 17:02.4) and Caiden Squillante (7th, 17:214.5) added top ten placings as well in helping the Bulldogs, with 28 points, edge Lincolnview (33) for the boys championship. Leipsic was fourth (112). Columbus Grove (54 points) was second to Lincolnview (22) in the girls portion of the meet. Bluffton (81) was third. Diego Baldazo led Leipsic in the boys meet, placing ninth overall in 17:25.8. Bluffton did not field a full team, but Levi Fenzil ran well for the Pirates, placing 11th overall in 17:29.7. Columbus Grove had two top ten placers in the girls race, with Lily Montgomery finishing third (21:03.6) and Sarah Kamphaus fifth (21:29.8). Bluffton's June Essinger was sixth overall (21:39.6) and Ella Armstrong was tenth (22:03.1). Sensabaugh was timed in 18:28.6 while Traivon Cousin was 16th (19:11.3). In the girls meet, Averie Tiell was 29th (27:41.04), but Fostoria did not field a full team.
