Trojans blank Springfield in sectional final

FINDLAY &emsp;&emsp;8 SPRINGFIELD 0 Findlay High's girls soccer team cranked up the offense on Wednesday, racing to a 3-0 halftime lead and adding five second-half goals in beating Springfield 8-0 in a Division I sectional final at Elmer Graham Stadium. Findlay got a huge match from Erin Meier, a senior forward who scored her 15th, 16th and 17th goals of the season and added three assists. Corrine Seager, Molly Ferguson, Leah Couch and Abby DiBerardino added a goal and an assist each. Seager, Ferguson and Meier all scored in the first 17 minutes of play. The Trojans led 3-0 at the half, then blew the match wide open. Meier and Couch scored goals three minutes apart midway through the second half, and Allison Brock, Meier and Abby DiBerardino all connected in the final eight minutes of the match. Daryna Yurchenko added an assist for Findlay. The Trojans attempted 42 shots and peppered Springfield keeper Rian Caywood with 26 shots on goal. Findlay goalie Zoe MCormick had seven recoveries, but had to make zero saves to get the shutout. Gabby Ritzler led Findlay defensively with 20 recoveries, a steal and five intercepts. Kaitlynn Eilerman had 17 recoveries and 11 intercepts, Olivia Gayhart 16 recoveries and 14 intercepts and Madilyn Stechschulte 14 recoveries and 10 intercepts. Unbeaten in its last four matches (2-0-2), Findlay improved to 7-8-3 overall and advances to Monday's 5 p.m. district semifinal at Sylvania Northview. There the seventh-seeded Trojans will face No. 3 seed Toledo Notre Dame (10-6-1), which beat Fremont Ross 8-0 in its sectional final. The two teams met up in mid-September at Elmer Graham, with Findlay taking a 1-0 victory. Springfield ended its season at 3-15-0. VOLLEYBALL FINDLAY &emsp;&emsp;3 SOUTHVIEW 1 TOLEDO – Findlay High's volleyball team had to work overtime on Wednesday, but it paid off for the Trojans in a 25-16, 13-25, 26-24, 26-24 win over Sylvania Southview in a Division I sectional final played at Toledo St. Ursula High School. Ava Buddelmeyer led Findlay with nine kills and Sadie Barnes had eight. Molly Crates had a team-high 28 digs, with Erin Caton adding 21, Delaney Harris 12 and Addie Roach nine. Harris also had 14 assists and Caton added nine for the Trojans (14-9), who will face No. 2-seeded Toledo St. Ursula on Monday in a district semifinal game at Lake High School. ST. HENRY &emsp;&emsp;3 VAN BUREN 0 ST. HENRY – State-ranked St. Henry lived up its billing on Wednesday when the No. 3-ranked Redskins rolled to a 25-18, 25-9, 25-17 win over Van Buren in a Division III sectional volleyball final. Selma Brant had 10 kills for Van Buren, Brooklyn Wilkin and Ashlee Deitrick had three each and Brylee Ponn had two. Brooke Ingwersen led the Black Knights (14-10) with 15 assists. Ava Cramer had a team-high 10 digs, Ingwersen had six, Megan Stall five and Brant four. O-GLANDORF 3 PARKWAY &emsp;&emsp;0 ROCKFORD – Sixth-seeded Otttawa-Glandorf knocked off No. 4-seeded Parkway on Wednesday, beating the Panthers 25-17, 25-16, 26-24 in a Division III sectional volleyball final. Sienna Fry led O-G with 11 kills, Ella White had nine, Kaitlyn Kimmet eight and Katie Kaufman (5 blocks) and Marley Buddelmeyer six each. Addyson Bellman had 33 assists and Claudia Maag had 14 digs for the Titans, who will face No. 1-seeded and No. 2-ranked Coldwater in Monday's district semifinal at Kalida. BOYS SOCCER OLD FORT &emsp;&emsp;3 BLUFFTON &emsp;&emsp;2 BLUFFTON – Old Fort's Isiah Perez scored nine minutes into overtime to give the Stockaders a 3-2 win over Bluffton in a Division III boys sectional soccer match at Steinmetz Field. Bluffton's Theo Andreas put the Pirates up 1-0 eight minutes into the game. Old Fort went up 2-1 14 minutes into the second half, before Bluffton's Ethan Blount tied it in the 61st minute. Bluffton (5-11-2) had the edge in total shots (26-16) and shots on goal (14-6). Truett Diller made three saves for Bluffton. Brock Miller had 12 saves for Old Fort (2-6-3), which is at Van Buren on Saturday for a sectional finala contest. ADA &emsp;&emsp;2 EASTWOOD 1 ADA – Nathan Williams converted a penalty kick that turned out to be the difference in the match as Ada edged Eastwood 2-1 on Wednesday in a Division III boys sectional soccer match. Carson Gossard put Ada on the board with an assist from Logan Jolliff. Williams' goal came after Eastwood was called for a hand ball in the box. Jacob Rush made two saves in goal for the Bulldogs (4-7-6), who advance to Saturday's sectional final match at Liberty-Benton. RIVERDALE &emsp;&emsp;3 ASH. CRESTVIEW &emsp;&emsp;1 MT. BLANCHARD – Ethan Elwood had a goal and an assist on Wednesday in leading Riverdale to a 3-1 win over Ashland Crestview in a Division III boys sectional soccer matchup. Owen Weatherholtz and Zach Tackett had second-half goals that boosted Riverdale's lead to 3-0. Tackett also had 19 intercepts and Riverdale goalie Landon Holland made two saves for the Falcons (5-12-1), who are at Mansfield Christian on Saturday for the sectional final. NEW KNOXVILLE &emsp;&emsp;4 OTTAWA-GLANDORF 1 GLANDORF – Ninth-seeded New Knoxville ousted sixth-seeded Ottawa-Glandorf from the boys soccer tournament on Wednesday, beating the Titans 4-1. New Knoxville (7-6-3) will be at Kalida for Saturday's sectional final. O-G's season ended at 5-11-1. (14-sub head) Correction Liberty-Benton's Adelynne Arps-Paris and Kylie Modd were first-team all-league in the North Central Ohio Soccer Association selections released this week. Primarily defenders, Arps-Paris, a junior, had one goal and two assists and Modd, a freshman, had a goal and an assist for L-B, which went 5-0-0 in NCOSA play.
