St. Ed's tops Findlay in matchup of ranked teams

ST. ED'S &emsp;&emsp;4 FINDLAY &emsp;&emsp;1 LAKEWOOD – In a matchup of state-ranked hockey teams, Findlay and Lakewood St. Edward's battled through two scoreless periods on Saturday. The No. 3-ranked Eagles pumped in four goals in the final 15 minutes, though, in beating the No. 6-ranked Trojans 4-1. Geoff Lapsevich scored two goals for St. Ed's. The Eagles led 3-0 before Nathan Marchal, on an assist from Conner Stearns, put Findlay on the board. Seth Russell made 38 saves in goal for Findlay (10-8-0). Victor Willock had 27 saves for St. Ed's (12-3-1). Findlay and Bowling Green will now co-host the 10th annual Holly Daze hockey tournament with games to be played at The Cube and the Slater Family Arena at BGSU. Findlay will play New Albany Wednesday at 7 p.m., Cleveland Benedictine at noon and Dublin Jerome at 7 p.m. on Thursday and defending tournament champion Cincinnati Moeller at 7 p.m. on Friday. A Findlay High alumni game will kick off the tournament Tuesday at 5 p.m. That event is free and open to the public. WRESTLING GIBSONBURG DUALS GIBSONBURG – Brooks Hill and Collin Wagner posted unbeaten 5-0 records in leading Van Buren to a third-place finish in the Gibsonburg Duals wrestling tournament,. Brody Scoles, Tommy Basinger, Ryan Gifford and Drew Phillips all went 4-1 in their matches. Johnnie Omlor and Blake Francis were 3-2. GYMNASTICS HAMLER – Josey Weihrauch and Emmy Omlor placed 1-2 in the all-around standings on Saturday when Findlay High's gymnastics team competed in a four-school meet at Patrick Henry. Weihrauch did not win an event, but amassed the most all-around points (33.00) by scoring well in all four. The freshman was second on uneven bars (7.65), balance beam (8.45) and floor (8.75) while also placing fourth on vault (8.15). Omlor, a three-time state qualifier and the lone senior on a young FHS squad, was first on bars (8.35) and floor (8.80) and fourth on beam (7.75), placing second all-around with 32.95 points. Gabrielle Doering, a junior, was fifth (30.90) and freshman Renee Metzger eighth in the all-around standings. Doering was third on bars (7.40) and Allison Niederkohr was fourth on floor (8.60). Findlay compiled 127.95 points in the meet. Patrick Henry had 119.15 and Tinora 117.30. Defiance also took part, but did not field a full team.
