FHS hockey finishes 5th at Pennsylvania Invite

MEADVILLE, Pa. --After scoring a tie on Friday night, Findlay's hockey team split two games at the Meadville Bulldogs Invitational Saturday before wrapping up the tournament with another draw Sunday.The Trojans, ranked sixth in the statewide hockey poll, shut out McDowell 2-0 Saturday morning, then fell later in the day to Erie Cathedral, 4-1.FHS finished its weekend in Pennsylvania by tying Medina, 3-3. They went 1-1-2 in the invite and finished fifth overall.The Trojans record stands at 17-9-3. They return to The Cube Friday to host Anthony Wayne.The highlight of the weekend belonged to Findlay goalkeeper Seth Russell. With the shutout of McDowell Saturday, Russell set a program record for shutouts in a single season, with six. In that game, Russell stopped 24 shots.Both of Findlay's goals came in the first period, with A.J, Savage finding the net off a Nate Riegle assist at the 13:05 mark.Less than two minutes later, the FHS struck again. This time, Kaden Weasel converted a pass from Kaleb Haubert at 11:42. Findlay maintained that two-goal advantage the rest of the way.McDowell, a team out of Pennsylvania that – by coincidence – also is nicknamed the Trojans, got 23 saves from its goalkeeper, Dillon Martin.In the Saturday's second game, against the Ramblers, Findlay fell behind 2-0 in the first period, after goals by Erie Cathedral's Joey Walter and Tucker Kinnear. Garrett Schwartz and Vinnie Scalise assisted on the first goal for the Ramblers; Mike Cortitore and Rylan Sorge on the second.With seven minutes left in the second period, Logan Taylor's goal – off another assist by Sorge – made it 3-0 Ramblers.Findlay found the back of the net early in the third period. Jackson Fletchner assisted on a Colin Sommerville goal with 11:13 remaining in regulation, making it 3-1. But Caleb Dacus gave the Ramblers some more insurance with an unassisted score at the 5:35 mark.Erie Cathedral's Tanner ball made 15 saves in goal. Russell had 21 for Findlay.In the finale with the Bees, Somerville broke a scoreless tie with two seconds left in the second period with an unassisted goal.FHS held that lead until the Bees tied it when Massimo Porter found the back of the net off an assist from Chris Walters at the 13:09 mark of the third. A little more than a minute later, Medina took the lead when Brandon Jenkins netted an unassisted goal.Findlay tied the game again, at 2, when Draven Wilson scored off a Savage assist at 7:29.Less than a minute later, Findlay took the lead, this time on another Somerville goal, which was scored on another Savage assist.But the Bees knotted things for good, at 3, when Porter scored off a Colton Sulima assist with 4:54 remaining.Russell made 16 saves for FHS; Medina's Cole Keller had 25 in goal.
