Toledo museum hosting Marisol exhibit

TOLEDO — Toledo Museum of Art is presenting a retrospective on Pop art icon Marisol beginning this weekend. An overlooked modern artist, Marisol, who was Venezuelan-American and born in Paris in 1930, was renowned for her distinctive style of figurative sculpture which utilized found material, painting, drawing and sometimes photographs in her large-scale groupings and carved-wood compositions, a release from the museum states. She achieved critical acclaim and a measure of fame in the 1960s, appearing in two Andy Warhol films and holding popular gallery exhibitions. "Marisol: A Retrospective" at TMA includes sketches, self-portraits, source materials, studies and personal photographs in addition to some of Marisol's works of art, more than 200 objects in total. The exhibition opens Saturday and runs through June 2. Admission to the exhibition is $10 per visitor and free for TMA members. The museum will host a variety of events relating to the exhibit, including a party for TMA members; a conversation about Marisol with Jessica Hong, the museum's senior curator of modern and contemporary art, and Cathleen Chaffee, Buffalo AKG Art Museum's Charles Balbach chief curator; docent-led tours of the exhibit; and an accompanying chamber music performance by BGSU's Early Music Ensemble. All events require registration at toledomuseum.org. TMA is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays; and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The museum is closed Mondays, Tuesdays and on certain holidays. Admission is free.
