FHS tennis team finishes third in NLL

PERRYSBURG – Findlay's No.1 doubles team of Aaron Miller and Owen Vick placed second and the Trojans finished third in the final Buckeye Division team standings after the Northern Lakes League held its boys tennis tournament at the Perrysburg Tennis Center on Tuesday. Miller and Vick opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Perrysburg's Jack Kreinkamp and Solomon Lambdin, but suffered a tough 7-6 (3), 6-7 (3), 6-3 loss in the championship match to Anthony Wayne's Ian Briars and Geyer Tollstam. Sam Swisher was third at No. 1 singles, and Findlay got a third-place finish at No. 2 doubles from Ben Mayle and Owen Metz. Swisher rebounded from an opening 7-6 (2), 6-4 loss to Anthony Wayne's Logan Sutto to beat Toledo Whitmer's Sam Just 6-2, 6-2 and Perrysburg's Jevin Mullins 6-3, 6-0. Mayle and Metz beat Whitmer's Rachel Rutledge and Jaffe in their first match, fell in the second round to Anthony Wayne's Josh Kohntopp and Reed Hahn, 6-2, 6-2, then rallied to beat Sylvania Northview's Gavin and Ethan Mack 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. Singles players Jonathan Wight (No. 2) and Cohen Perkins (No. 3) both won their openers, but fell in the second and third rounds in going 1-2 in their matches and placing fourth. Findlay entered the NLL tournament with 16 points, earned by going 8-2 in head-to-head regular season matches with NLL opponents. The Trojans added 15 points for their tournament placings on Tuesday, and were third in the overall standings with 31 points. Anthony Wayne won the 2024 NLL Buckeye Division crown with 44 total points. Perrysburg had 39, Northview was fourth with 30 and Whitmer had 12. SOFTBALL PERRYSBURG 22 FINDLAY &emsp;&emsp;0 PERRYSBURG – Perrysburg lead-off hitter Hayley Griggs belted two home runs and drove in five runs, igniting an explosive offensive night by the Yellow Jackets in their 22-0 Northern Lakes League romp over Findlay. A junior shortstop already committed to play college ball for Florida State, Griggs spearheaded a 21-hit attack. Yesenia You was 4-for-4 with three singles, a triple and three runs-batted-in, winning pitcher Maisson Gerrard lined three doubles, drove in a run and scored three and Aly Sueberling plated four runs with two singles and a triple. Perrysburg scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and added a nine-run rally in the third. Gerrard and reliever Maddie VanSlacken gave up just two hits – singles by Lola Spieles and Reagan Bruskotter. Nathan Marchal led Findlay with three goals. Jackson Lanes and Ben Mueller added one each. Cole Kirian had two assists and Will Hammer one. Goalie Jude Brasfield made 11 saves for the Trojans, 7-6 overall and 2-3 in league matches. TRACK HARDIN COUNTY MEET DOLA – Riverdale dominated the girls standings and the Falcons were second in the boys scoring at the Hardin County track meet held at Hardin Northern on Tuesday. Riverdale rolled to a 230-141 margin of victory over Kenton in the girls standings. Ada was third (65.50) and Hardin Northern fifth (29) among the six schools in the meet. Kenton (143) edged Riverdale (127) for the boys title, with Ada a close third (112) and Hardin Northern fifth (37). Allison Woodruff had a record-breaking kind of night for Riverdale's girls, winning both the 1,600-meter run (5:14.06) and the 3,200 (11:28.83) in new meet times. Marissa Bonham set a meet record in the 400 (59.91) and won the 200 (26.63). Kendel Rall was a triple winner for the Falcons, winning the 100 (17.9) and 300 hurdles (48.81) and the long jump (16-8¼). Riverdale swept the relays, setting a meet record of 10:02.48 in the 3,200 in the process. Ella Roach won the 100, Kinsey Shull the discus (95-5½), Shae Barger the high jump (4-10) and Katie Boucher the shot. In the boys meet, Riverdale's Andrew Woodruff captured the 1,600 (4:51.27) and 3,200 (11:02.15). Ada's Jackson Brown was a double winner in the 110 hurdles (14.99) and the 200 (23.00). VAN BUREN MEET VAN BUREN – Van Buren swept both titles during a five-team meet at Van Buren on Tuesday, outpointing Pandora-Gilboa 118.5 to 90.5 in the girls standings and 113 to 64.5 in the boys meet. McComb was third (58), Cory-Rawson fourth (50) and Vanlue fifth (1) in the girls competition. Cory-Rawson (62.5), McComb (43) and Vanlue (14) rounded out the boys teams. Van Buren swept the boys sprints with Mikey Pendergast first in the 100 (11.3) and Reed Harmon winning the 200 (23.65). The Knights also took the 3,200 with Carter Finley posting a first place time of 10:46.85. Mason Thorla-Lopez won the high jump (6-0), and Van Buren captured both the 800 (1:33,87) and 1,600 (3:38.01), relays. Pandora-Gilboa's Landen Moore was a double winner in the 400 (55.50) and the long jump (18-8¼). Cory-Rawson's Keegan Putoff doubled up in the 110 (15.91) and 300 hurdles (42.14), Carson Reese won the 800 (2:16.78) and Grant Welte the 1,600 (5:02.98). McComb's Elijah Gibbs won the shot with a throw of 50-0. Van Buren's girls swept the 800 (1:56.86), 1,600 (4:31.37) and 3,200 (1:05.74) relays, and got on-the-track wins from Kami Bowman in the 100 (13.22), Lacey Bowman in the 800 (2:451.58) and Maddie Hudok in the 300 hurdles (52.36). The Knights added field event firsts by Brylee Ponn in the high jump (4-10), Courtney Snyder in the shot (34-6) and Easton Wymer in the discus (114-1). Pandora-Gilboa's Savannah Knueven captured both distance events, winning the 1,600 in 6:01.85 and the 3,200 in 12:59.45.
