MCCOMB — McComb Local School District students were hard at work volunteering at various places around the village Friday morning. All were participating in the district's first ever service day as a part of the district's Leader in Me initiative. "We know that every child has a leader in them and they have a way to shine," said fourth-grade teacher Kathy Miles. "This is just one way that they can shine outside the school day, outside academics." Kindergarten through second-grade classes collected sticks, trash and planted flowers on school grounds, while third- and fourth-graders laid mulch, weeded and washed gravestones at the McComb Union Cemetery. Fifth- and sixth-graders visited the Village of McComb Community Park to weed, repaint park structures and rake playground sand, among several other activities. "It's been a wonderful partnership with the Village and our school administration because they didn't even hesitate, they embraced it as well, to let us do this today," she said. "These students are lucky to work in a community of people that support them day in and day out," Miles said. "This is just our small way of saying thank you for all that they do for us in our school." Students enjoyed a field day after returning to the school.
