UPDATE: Firecrackers lead to false alarm in Findlay

UPDATED 3 p.m., 6/11: FINDLAY — A report of shots fired turned out to be a false alarm in the 1800 block of Bishop Lane Tuesday morning, and firecrackers were found to be the source of the noise. At 7:48 a.m. Tuesday, Findlay police officers responded to a caller saying their neighbor fired three gunshots off of his back porch. A release from Findlay Police Department states the subject "has a known history of mental illness with the FPD." Police are not releasing the subject's identity because of ongoing mental health concerns, the report states. Officers arrived on scene and attempted to make telephone contact with the individual, but he would not answer, the release states. A PA system was used to try and establish contact, but the subject refused to acknowledge it. Officers located the neighbor who called the police and confirmed through audio recorded via their home surveillance system that "sounds consistent with gunshots" were heard coming from the subject's residence, the release states. The FPD Emergency Response Team was called to the scene. The ERT continued making attempts to communicate with the subject, but he refused to speak with police. A search warrant for the home was obtained. After multiple failed attempts at communication, the decision was made to introduce a portable phone into the residence. There were no open and unlocked ways into the home, the release states, so the front door was breached. The portable phone was brought in, but the subject threw it back outside the home. Continued communication attempts were made. Eventually, the subject's mother was able to establish telephone communication with him. An ERT negotiator took over the call and was able to convince the subject to surrender. The ERT then secured the subject without injury or further incident. The subject said he had been setting off firecrackers his backyard. A search of the home was conducted and no firearm was located. Remnants of exploded firecrackers were found in the backyard. The subject was arrested and incarcerated at the Hancock County Justice Center and charged with obstructing official business. A mental health screening will be done prior to his release.
