Violent crime rate in Findlay flat

FINDLAY — The Findlay Police Department released a report on crime statistics Tuesday to counter rumors and claims that crime rates in the city have climbed. According to the report, data collected by the city does not support those claims. The latest statistics indicate overall crime rates in the city have remained stable. The violent crime rate is flat, while non-violent crimes are down slightly. "While we are encouraged by the overall trends in crime rates, we recognize the importance of continuing our efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of our community," said Police Chief James Mathias. "Our commitment to reducing crime and enhancing public safety remains unwavering. We thank our community for their continued support and cooperation." According to the press statement, crime statistics in Findlay are tracked according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's categories and standards. Crime incidents in Findlay are compared to a three-year month average to examine changing trends. Violent crimes include homicide, robbery, assault, aggravated assault and sex offenses. Non-violent crimes include unlawful entry, theft, fraud, shoplifting, motor vehicle theft, arson, criminal damage/vandalism, domestic disputes and alcohol/drug offenses. Traffic accidents are well below the three-year month average, according to the data, while citations are up. The statistics also show the average response time of the Findlay Police Department has been at or below its six-minute goal so far this year. "At a time when folks are talking about national crime on the rise, that is not what we are seeing in our community," said Mayor Christina Muryn.
