Miller, P-G race past Arlington in second half

PANDORA – It looked like a game-changing moment.On the opening possession of the third quarter, with Pandora-Gilboa leading Arlington by a touchdown, Rockets' quarterback Cory Gerten threw a pass that was deflected, and went right into the arms of Red Devils' defender Ayden Cavinee.Cavinee returned the interception 20 yards to the end zone. After the extra point, the game was tied at 28."Their kid made a great play," said P-G coach Matt Hershey. "The Cavinee kid, what can't he do? He's a great player."For a moment, it appeared things were going to shift away from Pandora-Gilboa.And, perhaps a few weeks ago, something like that would have.Instead, the Rockets went right back to work. The offense went on a nine-play, 80-yard drive, scoring when Gerten sneaked the ball in from the Arlington 2.The Rockets went on to score two more touchdowns, while their defense limited the Red Devils just 18 second half yards. P-G won 49-28, winning for the third straight time after two losses to start the season.The Rockets are 3-0 in the BVC,"Early on, Weeks 1 and 2 in the season, we were folding," Hershey said. "We were done. But our kids have battled, they've continued to work hard, continued to believe in themselves and each other."The P-G offense attacked Arlington from all angles. Andrew Miller carried the ball 24 times for 213 yards and a pair of 1-yard TDs."It starts with our line," Miller said. "I don't even know what to say… Our line has stepped up from the first couple of weeks, and they've gotten better and better and better, and that has allowed us to run the ball."Miller certainly did his part when he got to open field, shedding tacklers as he pushed for more yards."He's refusing to go down," Hershey said. I can't count how many broken tackles he has, and he keeps those legs running."Meanwhile, P-G running back Ben Burkholder rushed for 109 yards, and Lane Lee added 25 yards and a late touchdown."We really struggled to tackle, and credit to their backs, they run the ball hard, they're big kids," said Arlington coach Nick Inbody, whose team fell to 3-2. "But again, it comes down to basic blocking and tackling. We need to get better at (it)."While the running game was working, the passing game also opened up for Gerten. He connected three times with Chase Meyer on touchdown passes (13, 22 and 21 yards) and finished completing 11 of 15 throws for 162 yards.Meyer had seven catches for 90 yards."We built that connection from last year," Gerten said.For Arlington, Cavinee had TD runs of 52 and 15 yards, while Drew Metzger added a 7-yard dash to the end zone.Cavinee finished with 10 carries for 75 yards, but was shut down after halftime."We got down and had to throw the ball," Inbody said. "They controlled the clock and just ran away with it there."Arlington will host BVC unbeaten Liberty-Benton next Friday. The Red Devils are 1-2 in the conference.P-G is hosting 0-4 Elmwood next week.
